About Rainbow Lodge

Rainbow Lodge is a resort hotel on the Tatai river in Koh Kong Province, Cambodia, reached by boat rather than by road. Cars drop guests at the bridge, where a boat meets them for a short trip downriver; from the landing it is a brief walk through the jungle to the lodge. Rooms are basic and clean, with fans instead of air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms and natural unheated showers. Because the lodges sit sheltered among the trees, guests report that fans are sufficient.

The lodge cooks its meals in-house using fresh local ingredients sourced from surrounding villages. Swimming is possible in the river directly in front of the property. Activities are arranged each day and cost between $22 and $50 per person: a shorter forest trek, a longer forest trek, full-day mangrove kayaking, a boat trip to a waterfall with pools to swim in, and a trip to Koh Kong Island for snorkelling and fishi...

The area

The lodge is in Tatai, in the Tatai and Koh Andet Commune of Koh Kong, Cambodia, set in jungle a short walk back from the Tatai river. Access is by boat from the bridge, where cars drop guests off. Trips run from the lodge to a waterfall with swimming pools, to the mangroves for kayaking, and out to Koh Kong Island for snorkelling and fishing.

Good to know

Rooms have fans rather than air conditioning, and en-suite bathrooms with unheated natural showers. WiFi works well in the main restaurant but is weak in the lodges. Excursions are arranged each day and are priced separately, from $22 to $50 per person. Arrival is by boat from the bridge pick-up point.

This was the most wonderful place we stayed in during our 3 week holiday in Cambodia. The kids say it's the most amazing place they've ever stayed in. A boat was waiting for us at the pick-up location (the bridge - where cars know to drop you - I'd been worried there might be a hiccough but it couldn't have been smoother and more welcoming) and then a short trip down the Tatai river takes you to the ecolodge which nestles in the jungle - a short stroll from the river - and to a warm welcome from Gee and Pi Rum. Gee and Pi Rum are a large part of why Rainbow Lodge is so special. Pi Rum took us on jungle treks to waterfalls and kayaking through the mangroves. He knows everything about the jungle and my son's eyes widened as he would explain each plant, insect and animal we passed (including a family of river otters). Gee accompanied us on a night trek to find spiders and tarantulas. What the two of them don't know about the flora and fauna doesn't need knowing. The food served every night (as well as the picnics we took with us) were delicious, home-cooked, fresh and generous. The rooms, complete with mozzie nets and ceiling fans (aircon really isn't needed here, with the cool air of the jungle) were comfortable. Waking in the morning to bird song was such a treat and Gee can identify every species if youre curious to know. It was a truly wonderful, immersive jungle experience while being comfortable and easy. You're in the jungle but the room feels as if you're in a hotel. You

Really lovely. Gee and Pirom (Managers) were great and really helpful. Few things to note: - Excursions were the favourite part - they range from $22 to $50 per person. We chose to go on the shorter forest trek and the full day mangrove kayaking. Other options were longer forest trek, visit to Koh Kong Island, boat trip to waterfall. Swimming in the river was great and straight Infront of the hotel. - Rooms don't have Aircon but fans are more than sufficient as the rooms are sheltered from the sun in the trees. Rooms are lovely. WiFi is good in the main restaurant but not great in lodges. - The food was amazing. Breakfast and lunch were menus with really good variety. We stayed with 6 other guests (9 total) and so dinner main course was buffet style. Dinner was 3 courses and changed each day on a set menu - it was definitely a highlight.

If you are looking for a holiday that gets you away from everyday life and into a different world entirely head here. Fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of the jungle, swim in the river and swing with the butterflies. Trips to the waterfall for a very natural massage from the water, swimming in the pools, exploring the area and jumping in from the top. Beach trip to Koh Kong island, absolutely stunning, crystal clear water, snorkeling, fishing and beautifully warm water. Kayaking in the mangroves, a great trip to see what you can see (nothing if you have 3 children like I do, they make too much noise, equally make their own fun though!), catching clams at low tide for dinner was also great. Pi Room was the best guide for this trip, making sure that my children enjoyed every second of it and showed them all the best hiding places for crabs. I went with my three children 13, 11 & 9, (mum, aunt and uncle too) we had the best time, this will be a holiday they remember for ever. The 13 year old got to go fishing and was delighted to catch something! The 11 year old loved every minute of jumping into the river from the rope swing. And my 9 year old loved spending time with Gee finding bugs and taking pictures of them. The food was great and no one went hungry, the fruit is incredible and the most fresh flavoursome fruit you will taste. The staff are incredible and we had the best time because of them, so thank you, we will be back, we are already missing everyone and everythi

One of the most authentic travel experiences I’ve ever had. The tatai river is beautiful and the work the rainbow lodge team does to respect and preserve nature through conservation efforts gives one hope for the future. A must do in Cambodia, a complete escape from the city into the jungle. Honestly, rainbow lodge serves some of the best food I’ve eaten in Cambodia too!

We stayed at this beautiful lodge for 3 nights, a place where the staff are dedicated and passionate about their mission to save and maintain the surrounding rainforest and all its wildlife. The service is amazing and nothing is too much trouble. All the home cooked food is delicious, using fresh local ingredients from the surrounding villages. Our room was basic and very clean, with a fan, en-suite bathroom with natural unheated shower which was a great way to wake up in the morning and perfect to come back to after a long day trekking or kayaking. The lodge arranges activities each day, or you can just simply relax in their beautiful surroundings. We would recommend this place to anyone who loves great hospitality & enjoys being surrounded by nature.

Trapeang Rung Restaurant

Restaurants 25.2 km 4.1/5 on Google

Trapeang Rung Restaurant is 25.2 km south-east of Rainbow Lodge — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The other place under “restaurants” within reach of Rainbow Lodge is Cambodian - Cham Halal Food Restaurant (25.6 km).

Trapeang Rung Restaurant is a casual dining spot in Koh Kong village serving Cambodian food throughout the day. The restaurant has a spacious layout with ample parking, and visitors describe the location as reasonably clean. The owner operates the place on a friendly basis, and the kitchen moves orders through quickly.

Most visitors praise the food quality and price point, with several noting the portions and flavour represent good value. However, the menu includes bushmeat, which may concern travellers with wildlife conservation interests — though alternative dishes are available. One visitor reported being overcharged and advised checking portion sizes and confirming prices before ordering, particularly for rice and meat dishes, to avoid paying inflated rates.

The restaurant opens daily from 7 AM to 9 PM, making it accessible for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It suits travellers looking for straightforward local food without formality, and those with their own transport will appreciate the parking. Budget-conscious visitors should clarify pricing upfront to ensure transparent dealings.

Cambodian - Cham Halal Food Restaurant

Restaurants 25.6 km 4.0/5 on Google

Cambodian - Cham Halal Food Restaurant is 25.6 km south-east of Rainbow Lodge — a short ride rather than a walk.

The other place under “restaurants” within reach of Rainbow Lodge is Trapeang Rung Restaurant (25.2 km).

Cambodian - Cham Halal Food Restaurant sits along the road to Koh Kong near Tatai. It serves pre-cooked Khmer dishes kept in pots throughout the day, with a fixed menu that changes seasonally. The setting is casual roadside dining with basic facilities.

Visitors give mixed reports. Several praise the taste of the food and cleanliness, noting fair prices and attentive service. However, other diners felt unwelcome and reported paying significantly more than they would elsewhere in Cambodia for the same dishes, with one guest citing an inflated water bottle charge. Multiple reviewers mention the pre-cooked nature of the dishes as a drawback, noting that food sits in pots for extended periods before serving. The perception of value varies considerably between visitors.

The restaurant operates daily from 7 AM to 9:30 PM, making it accessible for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It works best as a casual stop if you are traveling between Tatai and Koh Kong and want something quick rather than a destination meal. Check prices before ordering if budget is a concern, as visitors have reported inconsistent pricing. The halal certification will matter to some diners, but not to others passing through.
