If you want to try a little colonial opulence and antique splendor, this is your place. But be ready to pay the price... opulence is not inexpensive. The grounds are immaculate as are the views of the lake. The entryway corridor is worth the price of admission in and of itself. The staff and especially the owner leave a little to be desired, even more so in a place of this caliber. If the overnight price is too steep, visit the bar, The Drunken Elephant, on the grounds

Love, love love this place! Stayed here a few times for a wedding, leisure and business. Got to see elephants with this hotel on my latest visit. The food is good. The pool, rooms and garden... majestic. The view of the lake from their restaurant is like something out of a movie come sunset time. Highly recommend. Also the staff that are hired are Indigenous People from the jungles of Ratanakiri so English does not come easily to them so please be patient with them as they are really hardworking and hospitable people.

The room decorations were pretty decent, but $85 for a room with old, rusty facilities is overpriced. However, the real issue wasn’t the room—it was the people running this place. The general manager was, without a doubt, the rudest, most immature, and most unprofessional person I’ve ever encountered. Most of the staff had the same attitude, except for a few who provided the bare minimum level of customer service. It honestly felt like a family-run business where unqualified people just came together to run a hotel. I will never step foot in this place again. Avoid it unless you enjoy dealing with terrible management.

Terres Rouges Lodge was an absolute nightmare. The general manager was unbelievably rude, immature, and unprofessional, it honestly seemed like she wasn’t even educated, judging by how she treated my team. Instead of helping with our huge group check-in, she stood on the porch complaining about us in full view of everyone, while her team’s incompetence was clearly the problem. The customer service overall was abysmal. The receptionist kept demanding payment even before we had properly checked out, and the restaurant guy was openly complaining about us right in front of our eyes. Where’s your sense of customer service?! Every single second at the hotel felt like a nightmare. Not only did the general manager do nothing to facilitate the check-in process—she didn’t even greet us or smile—but our welcome drinks were just left on a tray for us to find on our own. It felt like she was there merely for decoration, which is saying something because even decorations have a purpose! The hotel was inflexible and rejected every little request, making us feel like we were begging for free lodging at $85 per night for multiple rooms. I wasn’t expecting royalty treatment, just the bare minimum respect and customer service that we paid for. On the day of check-out, I stayed silent to avoid a fight, but she continued throwing snide remarks at me. I have no idea what her issue was with our team or how someone like that became a general manager in what seems to be a family-run business where

I wasn't expecting this hotel to have such a nice environment in addition to locating next to a lake. Good size room, and was very nice and clean. The restaurant setting was amazing - open space. Can view the lake while enjoying your meal. The food was great! I had only ordered Khmer dishes during my four nights stay though. The staff were very friendly, professional and helpful. The daily rate was reasonable. Small minuses: thin wall, no TV reception, and a few friendly (or not) bugs. Definitely will be coming back.

Katieng Waterfall

Sights 9.3 km 4.3/5 on Google

Katieng Waterfall is 9.3 km south of Terres Rouges Lodge — a short ride rather than a walk.

Katieng Waterfall is a cascade in the countryside near Banlung, set within a small park that remains quieter than other waterfalls in the region. Visitors find a tiered drop with a cave running in a crescent shape beneath it, accessible by a steep trail with old stairs and slippery rocks. A heart-shaped lookout point serves as a photo spot. The base of the falls holds a pool deep enough for swimming, and a cave area provides shelter to rest and cool off.

The waterfall attracts consistent praise for its natural appeal and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors emphasize how deserted it feels compared to busier local attractions, and many mention the pleasant experience of swimming in the pool or exploring the cave underneath the cascade. The park charges a nominal entry fee (reported as one dollar for foreigners) and vendors nearby sell refreshments including sugarcane juice. A note of caution appears in reviews about the slippery rocks and uneven terrain—the trail requires careful footing, and at least one visitor raised concerns about potential snakes. The waterfall location is also home to an elephant trek operated by local handlers; opinions on this activity vary, with some visitors noting the elephants are chained but have forest space to roam.

The site is accessible year-round with no specific opening hours restrictions. Plan for roughly 30 to 45 minutes travel from Banlung city centre, though roads can be confusing and mobile signal is unreliable in the area. Asking locals for directions is advisable if uncertain. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip for the rocky terrain and bring a change of clothes if you intend to swim. It suits visitors seeking a quiet natural setting away from crowded attractions, though those uncomfortable with wet and uneven surfaces should consider the physical demands before visiting.
