Boost Coffee ＆ Bistro is 27 m east of Shang Hai — about 1 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from Shang Hai are Jaan Bai Restaurant (610 m) and Smokin' Pot Authentic Cambodian Restaurant and Cooking School (684 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

A café-bistro on Street 106 in Battambang, offering a menu that spans Khmer dishes and Western comfort food alongside coffee. The setting mixes an interior decorated with artwork and a relaxed, well-furnished outdoor seating area, giving visitors a choice between a proper sit-down meal or a quick coffee stop.

Most visitors leave impressed, particularly with the local dishes—stir-fried sticky spicy chicken and vegetables in Cambodian spice mix come up as highlights, along with vegetarian burritos and taco chips with guacamole. Service is generally described as attentive, professional, and friendly, with staff members sometimes singled out by name, and the place manages a steady flow of customers without losing pace. That said, opinions are not unanimous: one visitor found the Western options, such as a fried chicken burger, less satisfying than the Khmer menu, and a separate review reported a genuinely poor experience—undercooked eggs, stale bread, a hair found in food, and a server who barely spoke. These seem to be outliers against a broader pattern of praise, but worth knowing before you order.

Open daily from 7:00 AM to 8:30 PM, it suits breakfast, lunch, or an all-day coffee break, and works equally well for a relaxed solo visit or a group meal. Given the mixed report on Western dishes, leaning toward the Khmer specialties seems the safer bet. A small resident pug has also been mentioned as part of the charm for those visiting with time to linger over coffee.

Boeung Chhouk Market is 152 m south-west of Shang Hai — about 2 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “markets”.

The next two places under “markets” from Shang Hai are Khmer Prahok Market (5.6 km) and Boeung Raing Market (7.4 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Boeung Chhouk Market in Battambang is a wet market where locals buy everything from fresh produce and meat to clothes and jewellery. The market occupies two floors and operates from early morning until evening. Visitors describe it as a proper local market in the heart of the city rather than a tourist attraction, with stalls selling fresh vegetables and fruit, live fish, various cuts of meat and seafood, and everyday goods. Breakfast food vendors operate around the edges and in the covered area at the west end of the market, where you can find dishes like lort cha.

Visitors consistently praise the sensory experience of the market, particularly its energy and authentic local atmosphere. Most recommend arriving before 8:30 AM to see it at its busiest, when the market is crowded with residents going about their daily shopping. At this time, the stalls are fully stocked, live fish are still jumping in baskets, and the hustle is at its peak. Reviewers note that the market can be crowded and busy, with people constantly moving heavy boxes of produce through the narrow aisles, so navigation requires awareness and care.

The market is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM. It suits visitors wanting to experience Battambang's everyday local life rather than a sanitised shopping environment. The early morning visit — if you can manage it before 8:30 AM — offers the fullest picture of how the market operates and serves the community. Wear comfortable shoes and expect a genuine working market environment with all its accompanying sights and smells.

Preah Noray Roundabout is 323 m north-west of Shang Hai — about 4 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “sights”.

The next two places under “sights” from Shang Hai are Phare Ponleu Selpak (1.2 km) and Samrong Krong Killing Field (3.5 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Preah Noray Roundabout centres on a large statue of Lord Vishnu that dominates the traffic circle in central Battambang. The figure is notable for its scale and artistic detail, including the deity's distinctive multiple arms and sculpted physique. The roundabout itself functions as a working junction in the city, so visitors encounter the statue while navigating traffic rather than in a dedicated viewing space.

Visitors consistently remark on the statue's size and the quality of its craftsmanship. Many note the Hindu religious symbolism and appreciate it as a visual marker of Battambang's character. The main caveat is practical: the statue is embedded in an active traffic circle, which means viewing it requires attention to vehicles rather than leisurely contemplation. Some travellers find the repetitive loops around the roundabout distracting, though others treat this as part of the experience.

The roundabout is accessible 24 hours and requires no entry fee. It works best as a quick stop while moving through the city rather than a dedicated destination. It suits travellers interested in Cambodian religious iconography or those simply curious about local landmarks, particularly if you are already navigating Battambang's streets by tuk-tuk or motorbike.

Stung Sangke Theater is 382 m north-east of Shang Hai — about 5 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “cinema”.

The other place under “cinema” within reach of Shang Hai is RSB Ek Phnom Cinema (3.7 km).

Stung Sangke Theater is a multi-purpose event venue in Battambang with three separate halls (A, B, and C) that can accommodate groups larger than 2,000 people. Visitors find it set up for private functions rather than cinema screenings—it operates as a rental space for occasions ranging from weddings to workshops and corporate meetings. The venue offers what guests describe as clean, wide, and safe facilities.

Visitors consistently praise it as a reliable choice for celebrations, with several mentioning weddings specifically. Those who have used it note the staff as attentive and the food as good quality. The multiple halls allow flexibility in scheduling and group size, which reviewers see as a practical advantage. However, reviews are sparse enough that a full picture of the experience remains limited; most comments focus on wedding use rather than other event types.

The venue works best for groups planning private events rather than individuals seeking entertainment. Prospective users should contact the venue directly to discuss availability, pricing, and which hall suits their group size and occasion. Its location on Street 520 in central Battambang makes it accessible within the city.

A small breakfast and brunch cafe on Street 106 in Battambang, known for homemade bread and bagels baked in-house. The menu leans Western in style, with set breakfasts pairing eggs and bread with sides such as fresh local fruit, butter or jam, and coffee, plus wider options for lunch and dinner-style meals when needed.

Visitors repeatedly single out the homemade bread and bagels as the standout, often describing them as warm and freshly baked, alongside praise for generous portions that come with free extras like fruit or water included in the set price. Value comes up often too, with several guests noting that a full breakfast set costs only a few dollars. The staff are mentioned as friendly and accommodating, with at least one account of the cafe opening later than usual to fit in a second visit the same day. No significant complaints appear in the feedback, and the overall picture across reviews is consistently positive.

The cafe is closed on Mondays, open Tuesday through Sunday from 7am to 5pm, which makes it suited to breakfast or brunch rather than an evening stop except by arrangement. It suits travellers who want a filling, good-value morning meal with a home-baked feel rather than a quick coffee on the go, and portions are generous enough that light eaters may want to share.

Jaan Bai Restaurant is 610 m south-east of Shang Hai — about 8 minutes on foot. It is among the three closest places to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from Shang Hai are Boost Coffee ＆ Bistro (27 m) and Smokin' Pot Authentic Cambodian Restaurant and Cooking School (684 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Jaan Bai Restaurant is a Cambodian restaurant in central Battambang, positioned at a higher price point than most local options. The menu draws on Khmer cuisine with dishes like fish amok and chicken green curry, alongside items like pork and crab congee and mushroom dumplings. The dining space is air-conditioned and decorated with pictures across the walls. It operates daily from 11 AM to 10 PM.

Visitors consistently praise the food quality and flavour, with particular mention of the mushroom dumplings, bao buns, and fritters. The restaurant's atmosphere and service receive regular compliments. Some guests note it operates as a social enterprise supporting poverty alleviation in Cambodia. However, reviewers are divided on value: while some find it worth the higher prices, others flag occasional inconsistencies. Past diners have reported dishes arriving spicy despite requests otherwise, and one noted that seafood preparation could be improved. Staff knowledge of specific dishes is variable.

The restaurant suits travellers looking for above-average Cambodian food and a comfortable air-conditioned setting without the budget constraints of backpacker dining. Those seeking strict cost savings or seeking to minimise any risk of cooking errors may find local street alternatives more forgiving. Come with moderately flexible expectations about customisation, particularly around spice levels.

HUMAN GALLERY - Joseba Etxebarria Photography is 635 m south-east of Shang Hai — about 8 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “museums & galleries”.

The next two places under “museums & galleries” from Shang Hai are National Museum (1.3 km) and Mrs. Bun Roeung’s Ancient House (3.7 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Human Gallery is a small photography exhibition in Battambang housed in a renovated colonial building, showing portrait work by photographer Joseba Etxebarria. The images, taken across years of travel through Africa, India and Southeast Asia (much of it done by bicycle while working with UNICEF), focus on people encountered along the way, with locations and years handwritten on the back of each print. Photographs are displayed in various sizes, from postcards to large prints, and are for sale.

Visitors consistently mention that Joseba is often on site himself and takes the time to walk guests through the gallery, explaining the stories behind individual photographs and his years on the road. People describe the portraits as powerful and moving, and several say they ended up staying far longer than planned, sometimes an hour or two, simply looking at the images or listening to his account of the journey. The personal encounter with the photographer is what reviewers single out most, alongside the print quality of the works purchased. No negative points or complaints come up in the reviews.

Plan for around an hour, though conversation with Joseba can extend a visit considerably, so it suits travellers who aren't in a rush. It works well as a stop for anyone spending a day in Battambang, particularly those with an interest in documentary photography or travel stories, and it's worth going with cash on hand if a print catches your eye, since purchases are part of how the gallery supports the photographer's work. Note that his presence has been mentioned as something that may not last indefinitely, as he has spoken of moving on to new journeys, so it's not guaranteed you'll meet him in person.

Ktrey-Ktrok is 649 m south-east of Shang Hai — about 8 minutes on foot. It is among the three closest places to the hotel under “cafés & bakeries”.

The next two places under “cafés & bakeries” from Shang Hai are Cafe HOC (532 m) and The Lonely Tree Café (728 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Ktrey-Ktrok occupies a restored French colonial-era building in central Battambang, operating as a café by day and pub by night. The space blends period architecture with modern café fixtures, decorated with Khmer antiques. Visitors will find coffee drinks alongside a selection of other beverages, with an air-conditioned second floor available alongside ground-level open-air seating. The menu includes options like matcha lattes and cappuccinos, and the café stocks oat milk at no extra charge.

Visitors consistently praise the coffee quality and staff friendliness. The setting draws repeated mention—the vintage building itself and the quiet street location appeal to those seeking atmosphere alongside caffeine. Several guests noted the availability of non-dairy milk options and the cleanliness of the space. Pricing comes up as reasonable. One minor note: the venue transforms into a cocktail bar in the evenings with music, which suits some visitors but may not appeal to those seeking a calm café atmosphere after dark.

The café opens from 7 AM to midnight Monday through Saturday; Sunday hours are not listed. It sits on Road 2 in a fairly quiet part of town, making it suitable for morning work sessions or afternoon breaks. The dual function—café by day, bar by night—means timing matters depending on what you want from a visit. The non-dairy milk policy makes it practical for those with dietary preferences, and the complementary cookies and water mentioned by some guests suggest attentive service.
