used to be here back in 2015. As far as I remember, everything was satisfied. Room was clean, staffs were friendly, serving typical asian dishes for breakfast.

Hotel looked impressively from the lobby, but that’s where it ended. Rooms are very dated and in need of upgrading, AC takes forever to cool the rooms. Only two sockets available for a twin room, also very difficult to work with if you’re using an international adapter. Phone doesn’t work so you need to go downstairs to reception if you have any questions or requests. Shower door has a gap on the bottom so the entire bathroom floods every time you take a shower.

Awful experience. Day 1: They overcharged me. I had to pay upfront for 5 nights. According to the quote, transportation from the hotel to the airport (USD 45) was included. But once I paid, I realized that the transportation was not listed on the invoice. Days 2–3: I was busy with the conference (the main purpose of my visit). Day 4: After the conference ended, I wanted some “me time” and planned to enjoy the spa (sauna, jacuzzi, massage) as advertised on their website. When I tried to book a massage, I was shocked to find out that the spa had been closed for months! This was absolutely not mentioned anywhere on their website. I asked to speak with the manager because I was very upset. I had decided to extend my stay by 2 additional nights specifically because of the amenities. I wanted to visit the temples during the day and relax at the hotel spa afterward. Let me remind you — I had already paid upfront for the whole stay. After discussing with the manager, he agreed to offer me a free massage as compensation for the inconvenience. I asked him to make sure the staff was informed. He said yes. Day 5: Along with two colleagues, we planned to see the sunrise. We were scheduled to leave at 4:45 AM sharp. I asked reception the night before to prepare 3 packed breakfasts and ensure they’d be ready by 4:45. Of course, on Day 5 at 4:45 AM, the breakfasts were nowhere to be seen. Nor at 4:55 AM — by then our guide told us we had to leave and couldn’t wait any longer. Day 6:

Clean and spacious rooms. Not far from the night market/Pub Street Our flight out was late in the evening. We left the luggage at the lobby and went sightseeing & shopping all day. Once we got back to the hotel the staff gave us a room to shower & freshen up before our long flight out. Thank a lot for the gesture. Breakfast can be better since there is a lot of international guests

The hotel is really bad. Barely and lights in the room. There isn’t internet in the hotel room. The bathroom is gross. The bed is uncomfortable. Room service is trash. Manager over exaggerating about keeping the rooms unclean and taking videos of the hotel room without our permission. The food tastes really bad and the breakfast buffet is only open till 7am.

Aum Yoga Center, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Sport & fitness 1.6 km 19 min walk 5.0/5 on Google

Aum Yoga Center, Siem Reap, Cambodia is 1.6 km east of Royal Empire Hotel — about 19 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “sport & fitness”.

The other place under “sport & fitness” within reach of Royal Empire Hotel is MR.LY Gym and Boxing (2.8 km).

Aum Yoga Center sits on the grounds of Angkor Grace in Siem Reap and offers a full studio setup rather than a single yoga room: showers, lockers, a bathroom, drinking water, books and sofas for lingering before or after class. The schedule runs across styles — Hatha, Vinyasa, aerial yoga, aqua yoga and sound-focused sessions that use crystal bowls, chanting or a teacher's voice during shavasana, sometimes from hammocks. The space itself is designed around greenery and natural materials, giving it a calmer, more resort-like feel than a typical studio.

Visitors consistently single out two things: the cleanliness of the facility, down to guests noting their feet stay clean after barefoot practice, and the quality of the teachers, described repeatedly as professional, attentive and patient with beginners. The aerial yoga class comes up often, with newcomers saying the instructors make the inversions feel manageable rather than intimidating. Several guests who took daily morning classes during their stay describe the routine as genuinely energizing, and one mentions considering relocating to Siem Reap partly because of the center. No complaints or caveats surface in the reviews gathered here.

It is open daily from 7:30 in the morning to 7 in the evening, which allows for an early class before sightseeing or a later one to unwind. Given the range of styles offered, it suits both regular practitioners looking to keep a routine going while travelling and first-timers curious about aerial or aqua yoga in a low-pressure setting. Reviewers who attended multiple sessions in a single week suggest it rewards repeat visits rather than a single drop-in, so travellers with a few days in Siem Reap are likely to get the most out of it.

Parks & nature 1.9 km 23 min walk 4.4/5 on Google

Cambodian-Vietnamese War Memorial is 1.9 km east of Royal Empire Hotel — about 23 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “parks & nature”.

The next two places under “parks & nature” from Royal Empire Hotel are Flying Foxes (2.0 km) and Royal Independence Gardens (2.1 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

The Cambodian-Vietnamese War Memorial is a small park situated on one of Siem Reap's main roads, dedicated to remembering the historical cooperation and conflicts between the two nations. The site centres on a stone monument with distinctive architectural detail. There is no admission charge, and the space remains open around the clock.

Visitors consistently describe the memorial as a peaceful and quiet spot, even in the midst of the busy city surroundings. The stonework and architectural design draw repeated mention, with several noting that it rewards even a brief stop. Most who visit appreciate the free access and the respectful atmosphere, though some acknowledge there is relatively little to see and do beyond spending five to ten minutes observing the monument itself. The area has local vendors nearby selling food and drinks.

The memorial works best as a short pause during a day spent exploring Siem Reap's other attractions rather than as a destination in itself. Its central location makes it accessible to hotel guests staying nearby. Those interested in Cambodia's recent history may want to combine a visit here with nearby museums; visitors have noted it pairs well with more extensive historical sites in the area. There is no best time to visit given the round-the-clock access, though early morning or evening might offer a quieter experience.

The Heritage Walk

Shopping 1.9 km 24 min walk 4.0/5 on Google

The Heritage Walk is 1.9 km south-east of Royal Empire Hotel — about 24 minutes on foot.

The Heritage Walk is an upscale shopping complex in Siem Reap designed around a hybrid concept that blends indoor retail with outdoor and natural features. The mall includes a multiplex cinema, a handful of international food chains (Starbucks, Domino's, Pizza Company, Dairy Queen), a few retail outlets such as Miniso, and a basement play area. The building itself is spacious with thoughtful architectural layout, but much of the retail space sits empty.

Visitors consistently note that the mall feels quiet and under-occupied, with only a fraction of shops and restaurants operating. Most reviewers describe the atmosphere as deserted or declining, with limited variety for browsing or shopping. The practical reality for many is that the mall functions mainly as a spot for coffee or a quick meal rather than a destination for serious shopping. While the concept was apparently sound, the execution has not drawn sustained foot traffic, leaving large sections of the facility closed or vacant.

The mall operates daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Parking is paid, though the fee is waived if you make a purchase; visitors should note that a lost parking ticket incurs a 5,000 riel penalty. It suits visitors seeking air-conditioned dining options, a movie, or a coffee break in a quieter setting, but it is not the place to rely on for variety in shopping or dining unless you are specifically after one of the anchoring chains. The contrast between its designed potential and current activity level is notable enough that reviews suggest checking what is actually open before making the trip.

Spa & wellness 2.0 km 25 min walk 4.9/5 on Google

Relax Spa is 2.0 km south-east of Royal Empire Hotel — about 25 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “spa & wellness”.

The next two places under “spa & wellness” from Royal Empire Hotel are The Spa Siem Reap (2.2 km) and The Secret Eden Spa (2.2 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Relax Spa sits right next to the Park Hyatt in central Siem Reap, offering massage and body treatments in private rooms. Visitors mention a welcome of tea on arrival, a cold towel and refreshment before treatments, and a hot beverage plus fresh mango afterward. Massage oils come in a choice of scents, including lemongrass, and the facility itself is described as clean, spacious and well air-conditioned. Options mentioned by guests include shoulder, back, neck and head massages, foot massages, full body massages, and couples sessions.

Reviews are consistently positive and repeatedly note steady, well-judged pressure from therapists held for the full duration, friendly and professional staff, and a calm, comfortable atmosphere that some guests connect to Khmer and Buddhist sensibilities. Several reviewers highlight promotional discounts, including a 50% off deal that made longer sessions, such as a two-hour massage, feel like good value. A couple of guests mention personal touches, such as staff arranging a small birthday surprise. No significant complaints appear across the reviews, though the frequent mention of time-limited promotions suggests standard rates may differ from what some visitors paid.

The spa is open daily from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, making it workable for an evening treatment after a day at the temples or a pre-dinner stop given its Central Park location. Given its popularity and the mentions of discounted packages, it is worth asking about current promotions when booking, and reserving ahead if you want a specific time slot or a couples room. It suits travellers wanting a straightforward, comfortable massage experience in a convenient, easy-to-find location rather than a resort-style wellness retreat.

Legend Cinemas Siem Reap is 2.0 km south-east of Royal Empire Hotel — about 25 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “cinema”.

The other place under “cinema” within reach of Royal Empire Hotel is Sabay Cinema Siem Reap (2.4 km).

Legend Cinemas Siem Reap is a multiplex cinema in the city centre offering standard and premium screening options. Visitors find well-maintained halls with spacious seating, good air conditioning, and controlled lighting. The cinema shows films in original versions with subtitles across 2D, 3D, and VIP screening rooms. Regular tickets cost around $3.50, with premium VIP options available at higher prices. Online ticketing is straightforward and accepts credit card payment without requiring account registration.

Guests consistently praise the comfort of the seats and the quality of the sound system. The air conditioning is noted as effective, and the cinema stays cool even during afternoon screenings. Staff are described as helpful and friendly. Several visitors mention the VIP theatre option, which includes reclining La-Z-Boy style seats, blankets, and complimentary snacks and drinks brought to your seat. Prices across the board—for tickets, snacks, and drinks—are reported as very affordable compared to cinemas elsewhere. No significant complaints appear in visitor feedback.

The cinema is open daily from 9 AM to 10:30 PM, making it accessible for both afternoon and evening screenings. It suits anyone wanting a comfortable, air-conditioned escape in Siem Reap, whether watching a mainstream release or catching up on international films. The VIP option works well for couples or anyone seeking a more relaxed, cushioned experience. Given the modest ticket prices and friendly service, it's worth checking what's currently screening before visiting.

Graines de Piaf is 2.0 km south-east of Royal Empire Hotel — about 25 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from Royal Empire Hotel are Mesa - Restaurant (2.3 km) and Wild (2.6 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Tucked on Funky Lane in Siem Reap, Graines de Piaf is a small French restaurant open evenings only, run by a French owner who cooks and often talks guests through the menu himself. Dishes mentioned by visitors include bavette, magret de canard, pork filet with truffle sauce, duck in mustard sauce, beef fillet and creme brûlé, with meals typically served with salad and bread in the French style, alongside wine the owner is happy to pair with the food.

Reviews are consistently positive, with guests praising the quality and freshness of the cooking, reasonable prices, and the warmth of the owner, who is repeatedly described as friendly, passionate and attentive, including to non-French speakers thanks to an English menu. The one recurring caveat is space: the dining room is small and can get crowded and noisy on busy nights, with karaoke inside, so some diners have ended up seated outside among smokers, which they actually found quieter than the interior.

This is a place for an evening meal rather than a casual lunch, since it only opens from 6pm to midnight. It suits travellers who have had their fill of local cuisine and want a properly cooked French dinner with wine, or anyone curious about a small, personally run kitchen rather than a large restaurant. Given the limited seating and evident popularity, arriving early or booking ahead is worth considering, especially on weekends, and those who prefer a quiet indoor setting might ask about seating before committing to a table.

Parks & nature 2.0 km 26 min walk 4.7/5 on Google

Flying Foxes is 2.0 km south-east of Royal Empire Hotel — about 26 minutes on foot. It is among the three closest places to the hotel under “parks & nature”.

The next two places under “parks & nature” from Royal Empire Hotel are Cambodian-Vietnamese War Memorial (1.9 km) and Royal Independence Gardens (2.1 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Flying Foxes is a bat colony in central Siem Reap that roosts in trees within an urban park. These are large bats, comparable in size to small cats, with wingspans that make them distinctive when airborne. The colony remains active throughout the day, though visitors report they are most animated at sunrise and sunset. The site is free to visit and accessible at any time, sitting amid everyday city life—near a temple, vendors, and open to foot traffic and local residents using the space for exercise or recreation.

Visitors consistently emphasize the experience as remarkable and worth multiple visits. Many note the surreal coexistence of the bats with human activity: people playing badminton or doing morning exercises in close proximity while the bats go about their routines undisturbed by noise, music, or crowds. The colony is reliable—reviewers mention returning night after night across visits spanning days or weeks. Some visitors bring drinks and settle in to watch. One caveat: the surrounding area can be loud, with temple drumming and amplified music from nearby venues, though this apparently does not deter the bats. Weather can be unpredictable, and heavy rain sometimes forces early departures.

Sunrise is the optimal time to visit, when the bats are most active and the air is cooler. The site requires no tickets or advance booking. Bring a camera if you wish to photograph them, though their erratic flight patterns make still photography challenging—video may be more practical. The location suits anyone interested in wildlife behavior and natural history, and the free access makes it a low-commitment addition to a Siem Reap itinerary. Plan for the noise and crowds around the site, which are part of the urban context where these bats have chosen to live.

Museums & galleries 2.1 km 26 min walk 4.9/5 on Google

The Cocoon House - Art Gallery, Concept Store, Fashion Vintage and Skate Shop - by Cocoon Limited is 2.1 km east of Royal Empire Hotel — about 26 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “museums & galleries”.

The next two places under “museums & galleries” from Royal Empire Hotel are VIMEAN SOKHA MUSEUM (2.2 km) and The River Gallery (2.3 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Set inside an old colonial mansion on Sivatha Road, this Siem Reap space mixes an art gallery, a concept store, a vintage fashion corner, and a skate shop under one roof. Visitors find contemporary artwork alongside Asian and European antiques, film photography, own-brand clothing, and skateboarding gear, with pieces ranging from affordable finds to higher-value collectibles.

Guests consistently describe the atmosphere as unusual and inviting, crediting the family behind it, a mother and son, for making the visit personal rather than transactional. Several reviewers mention staff by name, noting they take time to explain the history of the collection and the story behind the shop, and even offer tips on where to eat or find good coffee nearby. More than one visitor calls it the best skate shop they have encountered, and the vintage and antique pieces get particular praise for being well curated and, in some cases, surprisingly reasonably priced. No real criticisms surface in the reviews.

The house is closed on Tuesdays, and on other days it operates in two blocks, roughly mid-morning to early afternoon and then again from early afternoon into the evening, so it is worth timing a visit around that split. It suits travellers who enjoy browsing rather than a quick in-and-out stop, since much of the appeal comes from the stories attached to individual pieces and from the chance to talk with the people running it. It works equally well for someone hunting a vintage watch, a piece of art, or simply a skate shop with more personality than stock.
