About Golden Papaya Guesthouse

Golden Papaya Guesthouse is a budget guest house in Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia, set on a dead-end alley wide enough for cars and tuk-tuks to pass through. The side street keeps street noise and traffic pollution away from the rooms, while the town centre stays within walking distance.

Rooms are spacious and clean, spread over several floors, with clean bathrooms and strong water pressure from the tap, shower and bum gun. Each room comes with toiletries, two bottles of mineral water, coffee and tea sachets and an electric kettle. WiFi reaches throughout the property, and free drinking water is available in the communal area.

The front desk rents motorbikes and bicycles at reasonable rates — one guest paid $7 for three days of bike hire — and arranges transport to other locations. A laundry service is available on site. Staff speak good English and handle check-in and check-out quickly. T...

The area

The guesthouse sits in Krong Siem Reap, in the town centre, on an alley wide enough for cars and tuk-tuks. Pub Street, the Old Market, the Riverside Night Market and the Royal Garden are all a few minutes away on foot, along with local shops and markets. A Buddhist temple, the riverside and parks are also within walking distance. Because the road is a dead end, the location stays quiet despite being close to the nightlife streets.

Good to know

Check-in and check-out are described as smooth and quick. Bicycles and motorbikes can be rented at the property at reasonable prices, and a laundry service is available. The front desk also organises transport to other destinations. Free drinking water is provided in the communal area, with two bottles of mineral water in the rooms.

Good value guesthouse in a central location to the main areas of Siem Reap. Close walk to the centre and local shops and markets. The staff spoke very good English and were really helpful with anything asked of. The room was fine for its purpose and there was free water in the communal area and WiFi throughout. Motorbike and bicycle rental was possible at a reasonable price here as well.

5/5 It is situated on a dead-end road, ensuring no street noise or pollution, which allowed for a good night's sleep. This is the best budget hotel, within walking distance to pub street, the riverside, the Buddha temple, parks, and more. Two young college students at the front desk are friendly, humble, curious, and eager to help. Thank you for your hospitality. I rented a bike for 3 days at $7 and used their laundry service. The check-in and check-out process was smooth and hassle-free.

The location is quite good, in the town center, close to Pub Street, Old Market, Riverside Night Market, and Royal Garden. Though the property is in an alley, but it's wide enough for cars and Tuktuk to go through. I stayed for two days, on 5 & 9 Jan. I got room 316 on the third floor on my first stay, and 117 on the first floor on my second. The room is quite spacious and clean, and the bathroom is too. The water flow from the tap, shower, and bum gun is strong. Toiletries are provided as well as two bottles of mineral water and coffee and tea sachet, along with the electric kettle. Free flow drinking water is available from the dispenser near the reception counter, just the water flow is very slow. I have no idea if it's on purpose so that it doesn't run out fast. The hospitality is quite good too. The young lady at the counter is friendly, welcoming, and helpful,. She helped me with my suitcase when I checked in and out. They also let the guests keep their luggage before or after checkout. On my first day of staying, when I came back at 9 p.m., one lady that seems to be either the owner or manager gave me two bananas. Though it's a bit funny to me, I really appreciated it. They show their care and try to ensure that I have a good experience here. One thing they need to improve is the shower loose position. The position of the shower in both rooms I stayed has been very loose that if I moved it up, it kept falling down and I cannot stand upright to have a shower withou

The next two places under “bars” from Golden Papaya Guesthouse are Laundry Bar (273 m) and ASANA OLD WOODEN HOUSE Cocktail Bar (284 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Barcode Bar is a drag show venue in Siem Reap's Mondul 1 Village that runs performances nightly from 9 pm. The bar seats guests for a three-hour show featuring performers in elaborate costumes. Visitors describe a casual, welcoming space with air conditioning and a mix of seating, from main tables to spots available on busier nights. The atmosphere draws both tourists passing through and repeat visitors to the city.

Guests consistently praise the quality and energy of the performances, with multiple reviews highlighting the entertainers' costumes and engaging stage presence. The staff and performers are frequently mentioned as warm and approachable—several visitors note that performers remember guests from previous nights and interact with the crowd after acts. The three-hour show format draws praise for its sustained energy. Atmospherically, reviews describe the crowd as lively and welcoming, particularly later in the evening on weekends, though Sunday nights are reportedly quieter than Saturday. The bar stocks drinks that visitors describe as good, though specifics are not detailed in guest feedback.

The venue opens at 8 pm Tuesday through Sunday, with shows beginning at 9 pm and running until around midnight or later. It's closed Mondays. The location in Mondul 1 Village is accessible but not in central Siem Reap's main tourist strip. The three-hour show length and late-night hours make it suitable for visitors planning an evening out rather than a quick drink, and guests mention it as family-friendly for teenagers. Arriving early on weekends ensures better seat options.

Cafés & bakeries 115 m 1 min walk 4.7/5 on Google

The Little Red Fox Espresso Cafe is 115 m north of Golden Papaya Guesthouse — about 1 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “cafés & bakeries”.

The next two places under “cafés & bakeries” from Golden Papaya Guesthouse are Dialogue (336 m) and The muffin man, Siem Reap (354 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

The Little Red Fox Espresso Cafe is a small coffee shop on Hup Guan Street in Siem Reap, located upstairs in a building that's easy to miss from street level. The space includes a terrace with local artwork and plenty of seating, both indoors with air conditioning and outside. The menu centres on coffee drinks, bagels, pancakes, and baked goods, with several vegan and vegetarian options available. The cafe operates daily except Wednesdays, opening at 7 am.

Visitors consistently praise the quality of the coffee, particularly the lattes, flat whites, and cold brew, alongside fresh pastries and breakfast items like Nordic-style bagels and peanut butter pancakes with cashews and maple syrup. The staff are described as friendly and attentive, and the environment is noted as clean and well-maintained. Most reviews highlight the good value for money and mention that locals frequent the place alongside tourists. One visitor noted the vegan brownie and cookie as standouts. The main caveat is closing time: several guests have found the cafe closing before its stated 5 pm finish, so arriving earlier in the afternoon is advisable if you want an unhurried visit.

The cafe suits anyone seeking proper espresso drinks and Western-style breakfast food in Siem Reap, particularly those with vegetarian or vegan requirements. It works well for a leisurely morning or early afternoon, with free WiFi and staff who don't rush guests. Note that it closes on Wednesdays and, despite opening at 7 am, may close somewhat earlier than the published hours suggest.

Bars 273 m 3 min walk 4.6/5 on Google

Laundry Bar is 273 m south-east of Golden Papaya Guesthouse — about 3 minutes on foot. It is among the three closest places to the hotel under “bars”.

The next two places under “bars” from Golden Papaya Guesthouse are Barcode Bar Siem Reap (89 m) and ASANA OLD WOODEN HOUSE Cocktail Bar (284 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Laundry Bar is a casual bar on Street 26 in Siem Reap with pool tables, a counter serving craft beers and cocktails, and a simple food menu. The space has the feel of a neighbourhood drinking spot rather than a tourist venue, though it draws visitors from across the world. It opens from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily and is known particularly for Wednesday nights, when open-mic performances bring live music to the bar.

Visitors consistently praise the social atmosphere and the mix of people you can meet there—solo travellers often mention it as an easy place to strike up conversations with expats and locals. Pool games are a draw, and those who attend Wednesday's open-mic night tend to be enthusiastic about the music and talent on display. Reviewers highlight the craft beer selection and cocktail quality. One note: some visitors report limited drink variety and have found the venue's responsiveness to orders inconsistent on quieter nights. Non-drinkers may find the mocktail selection thin.

The bar suits anyone looking for a low-key evening with other travellers and a chance to play pool or listen to live music. Wednesday is the night to go if you want a fuller room and live performances. Arrive after 4 p.m. It works best if you're prepared to order drinks readily and engage with the crowd; it is less ideal if you prefer a quieter table experience or need a wide range of non-alcoholic options.

ASANA OLD WOODEN HOUSE Cocktail Bar

Bars 284 m 4 min walk 4.7/5 on Google

ASANA OLD WOODEN HOUSE Cocktail Bar is 284 m west of Golden Papaya Guesthouse — about 4 minutes on foot. Of the 5 places under “bars” within a kilometre of the hotel, this is the best rated.

The next two places under “bars” from Golden Papaya Guesthouse are Barcode Bar Siem Reap (89 m) and Laundry Bar (273 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

ASANA OLD WOODEN HOUSE Cocktail Bar sits in a converted wooden house set within a small garden compound, styled to evoke a floating village dwelling. The bar is compact and intimate, with the counter as a focal point where bartenders prepare drinks. The venue operates its own gin distillery on-site, and the menu spans creative cocktails featuring Khmer influences alongside classic preparations. Free peanuts arrive as a side offering.

Visitors consistently praise the atmosphere, describing it as an oasis and a step back in time compared to the surrounding area. The cocktails draw specific mention — guests highlight the tamarind drink (described by staff as inspired by khmer somlor majou) and the house gin as worth trying, and note that non-alcoholic options are available. Staff performance across the board registers as attentive and knowledgeable, with multiple reviews noting the bartenders' skill and friendliness. The main reservation visitors raise is pricing, which runs higher than nearby establishments on Pub Street, though most feel the distinctive setting and quality justify the cost. The space accommodates solo diners without pressure to leave.

The bar opens from 4 PM to midnight daily (Sunday hours are not listed). It suits visitors seeking a quieter, more curated drinking experience over the higher-energy bar street scene. The location is in Mondul 1 Village on Street 07, accessible as an evening destination when exploring Siem Reap's accommodation area. Arrive early if you prefer less crowded conditions, as the compact size means it fills quickly.

Sights 302 m 4 min walk 4.4/5 on Google

Pub Street is 302 m south-west of Golden Papaya Guesthouse — about 4 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “sights”.

The next two places under “sights” from Golden Papaya Guesthouse are Old Market Bridge (355 m) and Made in Cambodia Market (397 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Pub Street is the main entertainment hub in central Siem Reap, a vehicle-free street lined with bars, clubs, restaurants, and food stalls. The strip fills with lights and music at night and operates around the clock, drawing both tourists and locals. Nearby is a night market offering additional food and shopping options. Visitors can expect everything from dance clubs and cocktail bars to casual seating areas and street food vendors.

Guests consistently praise the atmosphere and value. The street is energetic and social—people mention it as ideal for meeting other travellers and relaxing after temple visits, with an upbeat vibe comparable to entertainment districts in New Orleans or Nashville. Beer prices are notably cheap, with some visitors citing beers around 0.75 USD, and happy hour deals are common. Food options span many cuisines with reasonable pricing. The main caveat is the noise level; music is loud throughout the street, which some find exciting and others find overwhelming. Locals are reported as friendly and willing to chat.

The street works best as an evening and late-night destination after a day of sightseeing. It suits travellers seeking nightlife, casual dining, and a social atmosphere rather than a quiet experience. It is busiest after dark and operates continuously, so timing is flexible. Those sensitive to noise or seeking a more subdued evening should consider elsewhere in the city, though the street remains functional and welcoming throughout its hours.

Mesa - Restaurant is 326 m south-west of Golden Papaya Guesthouse — about 4 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from Golden Papaya Guesthouse are Wild (590 m) and Graines de Piaf (703 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Mesa sits right on Pub Street in Siem Reap, serving Cambodian food to a steady stream of visitors from late morning until midnight, seven days a week. The menu runs through familiar Khmer dishes alongside more adventurous options, from sweet and sour chicken stir fry and beef cheeks to roasted duck with curry and, for the curious, crocodile meat served in small tasting portions before you commit to a full order. Meals typically arrive with small extras that guests did not order but remember afterward — lemongrass or pomegranate tea, watermelon with dried fish flakes, banana chips, or a Cambodian pumpkin dessert offered on the house.

Reviewers return again and again to the service rather than any single dish, naming individual waitstaff who explained menus, steered orders around allergies, and suggested tasters for unfamiliar items like crocodile. Despite the Pub Street location, several guests specifically note that it did not feel like a tourist trap, crediting genuine attentiveness over a scripted routine. The one recurring caveat comes from diners less familiar with Cambodian cuisine, who rated the food itself a notch below the service — a reminder that this is a kitchen rooted in local flavors rather than international crowd-pleasing.

Given the location and the volume of praise, expect a lively, touristy stretch of street outside and a fairly full house inside, so evenings may mean a short wait despite the long opening hours. It suits travelers who want an introduction to Khmer dishes with guidance from the staff rather than a self-service buffet approach, and those who value being looked after as much as what lands on the table. Groups and diners with allergies or dietary restrictions appear well accommodated based on repeated mentions.

Dialogue is 336 m south-east of Golden Papaya Guesthouse — about 4 minutes on foot. It is among the three closest places to the hotel under “cafés & bakeries”.

The next two places under “cafés & bakeries” from Golden Papaya Guesthouse are The Little Red Fox Espresso Cafe (115 m) and The muffin man, Siem Reap (354 m), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Dialogue is a cafe on Street 27 in Siem Reap with both indoor and rooftop seating. The menu mixes western and Asian cuisines, anchored by a strong coffee program. Visitors report the espresso and lattes are among the best in town. The kitchen turns out standout dishes like fried rice and tenderloins, though some guests found other items unremarkable. Breakfast options include variations on eggs — one visitor had English muffin with poached eggs, hollandaise and bacon — though the cafe does not offer a full traditional English breakfast.

Staff are consistently praised as helpful and friendly, though there is a notable caveat. One guest mentioned that despite requesting it multiple times, their dishes arrived with bean sprouts despite a stated allergy, which raised concern for anyone with dietary restrictions or allergies. The kitchen's attention to special requests appears inconsistent. On the upside, visitors note the carbonara is rich and satisfying if you enjoy heavy sauces, though it may not suit lighter preferences.

The rooftop setting is described as chill and atmospheric, with indoor seating available too. Dialogue opens daily at 7 AM and stays open until midnight (closed Sundays), making it accessible for breakfast, coffee breaks, lunch or evening visits. Happy hour pricing makes it affordable. The location sits walking distance from Pub Street, though the daytime frontage can be hard to spot from the street — it sits on the corner of Street 26 and Wat Bo Road. This works well for anyone after reliable coffee and a casual meal, though diners with food allergies should verify orders carefully with staff.

A café on Wat Bo Road offering a wide selection of muffins, cakes and cheesecakes alongside a proper breakfast and lunch menu that includes salads, toasties and vegetable-based dishes. Coffee is made in an Australian style, and matcha and other drinks are also on offer. The interior is described as modern and calm, suited to sitting in for a while rather than a quick takeaway stop.

Visitors consistently mention the quality and freshness of the baked goods, with muffins, brownies and cheesecakes coming up again and again as standouts, alongside savoury options like lentil salad, vegetable stacks and chickpea fritters that cater well to vegetarian and vegan diets. The coffee draws particular praise for its quality. Portion sizes are called generous and prices reasonable, and staff are repeatedly described as friendly and attentive. No notable complaints or caveats appear in the reviews, and several visitors mention returning multiple times during their stay.

Open daily from 7am to 10pm, it works equally well for an early breakfast, a working lunch or a dessert stop after dinner, as one visitor used it. The range of vegetarian and vegan dishes makes it a reliable option for travellers with dietary preferences, while the mix of light meals and pastries suits anyone wanting more than just coffee. Given its popularity, arriving outside peak breakfast or lunch hours may mean an easier time finding a seat.
