About FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR

Firefly Beach Guesthouse Resto&Bar is a small family-run guesthouse, restaurant and bar on Koh Rong, Cambodia, built out over the water at the end of the island. Rooms and the porch sit directly above the sea, close enough that the water is visible through gaps in the floor and the sound of the waves carries through the night. The property is decorated with care and is run day to day by a local family, who also serve food on site.

Alongside the restaurant and bar, guests have use of a kitchen and a porch by the sea, so cooking together and spending an evening outside over a drink and a game of cards is part of how the place works. Mornings bring sunrise over the ocean; the setting sits between the seaside and forest, with the surrounding village and nature within walking reach.

This suits travellers who want a quiet, simple stay away from the island's party areas and tourist strips. It...

5/5 My first experience with fisher-man house hostels. Its raw and beautiful. I like the concept. The owner had many year experience in hospital industry and created this concept hostel and rooms. You are on the sea and experience sea water sound , wind, beautiful evenings, see water through floor. It is far away from tourist area and located a beautiful village with one road. Met a new Zealander stay for very long time and had wonderful conversation. Perfect place to experience in your vacation.

I loved this place. If you’re looking for something away from all the parties and very calming & relax - this place is perfect. Super friendly family who run it with a lot of eye for detail - the place is beautifully decorated! & lovely food. And stunning view, you’re right above the sea! Also the location feels much more authentic than anywhere else on the island. People still live in this village, lots of fishing families.

What an experience ◡̈ waking up to the sunrise over the ocean everyday, hearing the sounds of the waves at night. it is so calming and peaceful. the family running the place is super friendly and inviting. it all feels super authentic! loved it here. there is also amazing nature to explore around the village. (this is not a luxury stay nor are there many other backpackers/tourists. this is exactly what made it special to me, but might not be for everyone)

Amazing place to stay at the end of an island. Very solitude and peaceful. One of the most advantage is own kitchen, bar and porch by the sea. Great place to cook something together and spend a nice evening with friends with a wine/beer and cards.

Golden Beach Surf Club

Sights 6.6 km 4.9/5 on Google

Golden Beach Surf Club is 6.6 km south of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “sights”.

The next two places under “sights” from FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR are Coconut Beach (9.9 km) and Ocean Breeze (10.2 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Set on Sok San Beach on Koh Rong, this is a small surf outfit rather than a sight to simply look at — visitors come here to get in the water, either trying surfing for the first time or taking a lesson with the on-site instructors. The beach location itself is part of the draw, quieter and less crowded than the island's main strip, which gives lessons room to breathe.

Reviews are strikingly consistent and nearly all center on the instructors rather than the setting alone. Guests repeatedly single out Angelo, along with Greg and Andy, for being patient, encouraging and genuinely fun to learn from, with several mentioning that kids and complete beginners were put at ease quickly. People describe leaving with more confidence on a board than they expected, and more than one visitor says they would come back specifically because of the coaching. No recurring complaints or caveats show up in the feedback.

It is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, though Sunday hours are not listed, so it is worth checking ahead if you are planning around a weekend. Reviewers mention the low season as a particularly good time to visit, when the beach and the water are less busy. This suits families with children, couples looking for an activity to mark an occasion, and anyone curious about surfing without prior experience, since the emphasis throughout the reviews is on teaching rather than just board rental.

Beaches 7.3 km 4.5/5 on Google

Royal Beach is 7.3 km south of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “beaches”.

The other place under “beaches” within reach of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR is Kaoh Touch Beach (11.3 km).

Royal Beach on Koh Rong is a sandy stretch with white sand and calm, clear water. It remains relatively quiet and undeveloped compared to busier tourist beaches, with few vendors and minimal commercial activity. The beach is accessible by private boat and stays open around the clock.

Visitors consistently praise the quality of the sand and water, along with the peaceful atmosphere and sunset views. The main drawback mentioned across reviews is garbage—while hotel staff apparently clean the beach around midday, debris does wash ashore and visitors note they should take their own trash with them. The beach suits those seeking tranquillity without loud bar music or crowds, though some acknowledge that the calm comes with limited facilities and services.

Go early in the day to catch the sunrise and enjoy maximum quiet time. Bring supplies with you, including food, water and sun protection, as vendors are sparse. Plan to arrive by private boat (around $25 reportedly for a three-hour trip). This is a beach for people who want solitude and natural scenery rather than infrastructure or dining options.

MaLoop cafe and restaurant (Koh Rong) is 9.8 km south-east of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR are Happyplace (10.0 km) and CASA MIA PIZZERIA KOH RONG (10.1 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

MaLoop is a cafe and restaurant on Long Set Beach in Koh Rong Samloem, opening from 6 AM to 11 PM daily. It functions as both a casual dining spot and a motorbike rental operation, located about a five-minute walk from the Long Set Ferry terminal. The kitchen serves Khmer dishes alongside cafe staples, and the place draws both day-trippers waiting out weather and island visitors in need of transport.

Visitors consistently praise the coffee as among the best on the island, and Khmer dishes like fish amok and beef lok lok on rice receive repeated mention for flavour. The staff are noted for friendliness and language skills, with the owner described as flexible and helpful, particularly regarding bike rentals. One visitor's main caution was that the blueberry milk, while tasty, runs very sweet. Motorbike rentals from here are reported as fairly priced, with well-maintained newer bikes in good working condition suitable for exploring beaches, hills and off-road terrain across the island.

The location works best for those arriving by ferry who want immediate access to island transport without venturing far, or for anyone seeking a reliable meal and coffee break during a beach day. The walk from the pier is short enough to be convenient, though worth noting if you are carrying luggage or prefer immediate beachfront dining.

Coconut Beach

Sights 9.9 km 4.5/5 on Google

Coconut Beach is 9.9 km south-east of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR — a short ride rather than a walk.

The next two places under “sights” from FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR are Golden Beach Surf Club (6.6 km) and Ocean Breeze (10.2 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Coconut Beach on Koh Rong is a crescent of white sand fringed with coconut palms, facing calm, clear water. The beach is dotted with hammocks and bed loungers, and a handful of restaurants operate along the waterfront. A pier extends into the water, allowing visitors to dive directly from its edge. The atmosphere is relaxed—visitors report seeing families playing volleyball, children on wooden swings beneath the palms, and people watching the sunset from the pier.

The beach draws consistent praise for its cleanliness and the quality of the water, which visitors describe as crystal clear with a sandy seabed. It remains relatively quiet without feeling isolated, striking what several reviewers call a good balance between peaceful and populated. Visitors mention the sunset as particularly worth seeing. Among Koh Rong's beaches, some rank it highly alongside nearby alternatives like Lonley Beach and Pagoda Beach, though rankings vary by preference. A practical caveat: there is no useful convenience shop nearby outside the hotels themselves, so arrive prepared. The south side of the beach may be undergoing changes in ownership as of 2025.

The beach works best for anyone seeking a calm, clean swimming spot away from crowds, particularly those staying on the north side of the island where most accommodation clusters. To reach it, bike access is possible but navigation can be tricky—the beach sits at the bottom of a steep hill. Arrive with supplies in hand, as shopping options are limited once you are there. The sunset timing makes late afternoon a natural moment to visit.

The Balcony Koh Rong - Wine & Cheese House is 10.0 km south of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “bars”.

The other place under “bars” within reach of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR is Ocean Blue Bar (11.2 km).

The Balcony is a small wine and cheese house on Long Set Beach on Koh Rong, set slightly apart from the island's beach-bar strip. It specialises in charcuterie and cheese boards paired with a curated wine list, alongside coffee and a bottomless brunch on Sundays. The setting looks out over the jungle and sea, with mellow background music adding to the relaxed feel.

Visitors consistently single out the cheese and meat boards as generous, well-made and a genuine treat for anyone missing quality cold cuts on the islands. The wine pairing draws repeated praise, as does the smoked duck croissant mentioned by more than one guest. What comes up again and again, though, is the service: reviewers describe the team, including hosts named Louise and Neil, as warm, attentive and clearly invested in guests having a good evening. No real complaints surface in the reviews, only a wish from at least one visitor that they'd had time to catch the Sunday brunch.

This is a spot for slowing down rather than a lively night out, better suited to couples or small groups after a relaxed evening with good wine and food than to travellers chasing a party scene. Given that it's tucked away rather than on the main strip, it helps to ask locally or check directions before setting out, particularly after dark. It's worth timing a visit around the Sunday bottomless brunch if that fits the schedule, and worth arriving with an appetite, since the boards are reported as substantial rather than a token snack.

Happyplace is 10.0 km south-east of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR — a short ride rather than a walk. It is among the three closest places to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR are MaLoop cafe and restaurant (Koh Rong) (9.8 km) and CASA MIA PIZZERIA KOH RONG (10.1 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Happyplace is a casual restaurant on Koh Rong that operates around the clock. The kitchen turns out pizza, pad Thai, rice dishes, fried rice, and chicken wings. It sits in a relaxed, laid-back setting that fits the island's atmosphere, and the owner and staff are noted by visitors as genuinely friendly.

The pizza receives consistent praise—visitors describe it as thin, crispy, and flavourful. Pad Thai also stands out as a strong dish. Rice and fried rice options are available, and you can request them without egg for a vegetarian choice, though some visitors have found the French fries excessively oily. Service is generally helpful, though wait times can stretch when the restaurant is busy or a large group arrives at the same time as you. Prices strike visitors as fair for an island location.

The 24-hour opening means you can eat here whenever hunger strikes during your stay on Koh Rong. Arrive when the restaurant is quiet if you prefer faster service. It suits anyone after straightforward, well-executed casual food in a friendly environment rather than fine dining.

Ava Café is 10.1 km south-east of FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “cafés & bakeries”.

The next two places under “cafés & bakeries” from FIREFLY BEACH GUESTHOUSE RESTO&BAR are Bella Vista (11.4 km) and Ma Baker (11.5 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Ava Café sits near the Long Set pier on Koh Rong, a small coffee stop for travellers staying or passing through Long Beach. The menu runs to espresso-based drinks with options like oat milk and flavoured syrups, served in cups reviewers noted for their quality, alongside iced versions such as vanilla or caramel lattes.

Visitors are consistent in singling out the coffee itself as a standout on the island, calling it strong and well made, and several say it is the best they have found in the Long Beach area. The service also comes up repeatedly, with mentions of a friendly, quick owner who is often smiling, and a resident puppy that gets a mention too. The one recurring caveat is about the seating area, with a request for more fans to deal with the heat, and one note that dessert options are limited.

The café opens daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, making it a straightforward morning or early afternoon stop rather than an evening one. It suits travellers based around Long Beach who want a reliable coffee fix between beach time, and those looking for dietary options like oat milk will find them here. Given the limited seating comfort mentioned by some, it may work better for a quick coffee than a long lounging session, though the quality and service are what keep people coming back.

Casa Mia Pizzeria occupies a spot on Pub Street in Long Set, Koh Rong's main social hub. It is run by an Italian chef and serves wood-fired pizza and Italian pasta dishes. The space is described as warm and cozy, with decor visitors find appealing. The restaurant changed hands in February, and current visitors report strong quality across the menu.

Guests consistently praise the pizza, particularly the crust—crispy and light—and the quality of toppings and ingredients, which visitors find difficult to reconcile with the island location. Pasta dishes, especially carbonara, draw comparable praise for authenticity and flavour. The Italian chef is noted as a visible presence who brings genuine expertise to the kitchen. Staff friendliness is mentioned across multiple reviews. A note for context: earlier negative reviews online relate to the previous management; the current ownership has shifted visitor experience noticeably. Wine selection appears curated, with visitors mentioning specific choices like Amarone and Aperol Spritz.

The restaurant sits on Pub Street, making it accessible in the evening when tourists typically gather. Go expecting prices higher than casual island eateries but justified by ingredient quality and technique. It suits visitors looking for genuinely made Italian food rather than tourist approximations, and those willing to spend accordingly for dinner with friends or a date night on the island. Reservations are advisable on busy evenings given its popularity and island location.
