Hotels near Krong Kep Blue Crab Statue

The blue crab statue stands at Chhak Kep Bay as the visual centrepiece of Kep's waterfront. It is a large sculpture representing the town's historical association with the flower crabs that once made the area famous, though visitors note these are no longer abundant in local waters. The statue itself is accessible around the clock and sits in a bay area surrounded by remnants of colonial-era French architecture and overgrown forest. Food stalls along the pathway sell grilled shrimp and squid to visitors.

Travellers generally find the statue worth photographing and note it is not crowded. The sculpture is distinctive and photographs well. However, the surrounding area divides opinion. Some visitors enjoy the sea breeze and nearby hillside cafes with horizon views, particularly noting that weekends bring local families who rent huts and hammocks for the day. Others report the beach itself is littered with trash and metal debris, making it unsuitable for swimming, and find limited sit-down dining options beyond street food vendors. Seafood availability varies by what the day's catch brings in.

The journey to Kep from Kampot involves rough road conditions with potholes, so allow extra travel time. The beach is better suited to watching the water and enjoying the air than for bathing. Weekends draw significant local crowds, so those seeking solitude should visit on weekdays. The site works best as a photo stop combined with exploring the surrounding cafes and colonial ruins rather than as a beach destination. Those expecting the town to match historical descriptions of thriving crab fishing may find the current reality underwhelming.
