Young Kimla guest house

Happy Family Restaurant is 1.6 km south of Young Kimla guest house — about 20 minutes on foot.

Happy Family Restaurant is a Khmer dining establishment in central Kampong Thom, open daily from 7 AM to 8:30 PM. It serves traditional Cambodian dishes made with home-grown vegetables, and is particularly known for its dried buffalo meat. The restaurant has space for children to move around, making it accessible for families travelling through the town.

Visitors consistently praise the authenticity of the Khmer food and the friendliness of staff and owners. However, reviews are divided on value. Some diners find portions justified and the menu worth returning for; others report feeling that both food and beverages are overpriced for the area, noting that bottled water costs significantly more here than elsewhere in town. Service speed has also been flagged as notably slow by at least one visitor. The restaurant is popular enough that advance booking is recommended to secure a table.

The restaurant suits travellers stopping in Kampong Thom between destinations, particularly those interested in authentic Khmer cuisine and families with children who have space to occupy them during meals. Arrive with realistic expectations about pace and pricing, and book ahead rather than turning up unannounced.

Kampong Thom Museum is 3.0 km south-west of Young Kimla guest house — a short ride rather than a walk.

Kampong Thom Museum is a single-room museum in Kampong Thom City that houses artifacts from temples across the province. The collection spans the 8th to 12th centuries and includes stone lintels, statues, and carved pieces. Displays come with English and French translations, and entry is free. The museum also has a small outdoor gallery space.

Visitors consistently note the museum's modest size but speak well of the quality and condition of the collection. Guests appreciate it as an accessible introduction to Khmer art and the region's pre-Angkorian history as the former seat of the Chenla Kingdom. Several reviewers mention the museum is worth a stop if you are already in the province, and some suggest it pairs well with a visit to the nearby Sambor Prei Kuk temple complex. No significant complaints appear in visitor feedback.

The museum opens daily from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. It works best as a quick visit rather than a lengthy outing. This suits travellers with an interest in Cambodian art and history who are passing through Kampong Thom, or those using it as a contextual stop before exploring the temples outside the city. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for a thorough look at the displays.

Village Coffee sits on an unnamed road in Stung Sen, the central district of Kampong Thom. It is a local café with outdoor seating surrounded by greenery, designed for lingering rather than rushing through. Visitors find coffee and a relaxed setting, with enough space to work or meet friends.

Guests consistently praise the atmosphere and coffee quality. Multiple visitors mention the outdoor seating as a particular strength, especially in morning and afternoon light before sunset. Phnom Penh Bakery KPT is 3.7 km south-west of Young Kimla guest house — a short ride rather than a walk.

The other place under “cafés & bakeries” within reach of Young Kimla guest house is Village Coffee (3.2 km).

Phnom Penh bakery is a café in Kampong Thom town, located on National Road Number 6, that focuses on fresh baked goods. Visitors consistently mention warm, crispy breads and mini baguettes at low prices around 500 riels each. The range includes white bread, donuts, and pizzas alongside other baked items. The café bakes fresh throughout the day and has separate men's and women's toilets on site.

Visitors praise the quality and crispness of the breads and value for money. Several reviewers return on every trip to Cambodia. However, there is a significant split in opinions on flavour: some find the products fine as they are, while others note that many items—particularly savoury offerings like pizza—taste predominantly of sugar rather than what they expect. One visitor was disappointed with the toilet facilities, describing them as poorly maintained, though another reported them as functional and separate by gender.

The café opens from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily, making it suitable for breakfast before travelling or a quick afternoon snack. It works best if you enjoy or are indifferent to sweeter-tasting baked goods; if you prefer distinctly savoury bread products, you may want to check what is freshly baked before ordering. The location on the main road makes it easy to find when passing through Kampong Thom.

The Third Place 2 BBQ & SOUP is 4.0 km south-west of Young Kimla guest house — a short ride rather than a walk.

The Third Place 2 BBQ & SOUP is a casual dining establishment in Kampong Thom where the main draw is hot pot cooked at your table. The venue operates from early morning through late evening, serving a local clientele who come for the interactive cooking experience and the broths that define the menu. The setting is straightforward—not a polished establishment, but built around the food and the communal aspect of the meal.

Visitors consistently mention that the food is tasty and priced affordably. The atmosphere tends to be popular with locals, which several guests note as a sign of authenticity. An important caveat: there is no English menu, so ordering requires either pointing to what other diners are eating or relying on the head waitress, who speaks English well enough to guide newcomers through their choices. Cleanliness appears to be maintained according to visitor reports.

This suits travellers looking for an unpretentious, genuinely local eating experience rather than a tourist-oriented venue. Come prepared to communicate through gestures or images if your Khmer is limited, though the staff member who speaks English can help. The early opening hours—from 4 AM—mean it caters to a specific crowd; evening visits are more typical for tourists. Note that opening hours are not confirmed for Sunday.

Kampong Thom Playground is an open-air recreation space in central Krong Stueng Saen offering play equipment, open ground for movement, and views toward the nearby canal. The park stays open around the clock and draws families with children, skateboarders, and people seeking an accessible outdoor area. The setting includes nearby food vendors and the Kampong Thom market within easy walking distance, along with free parking for visitors.

Visitors consistently praise the variety of play structures—swings, slides, and climbing equipment suitable for different ages—and note the park's cleanliness and spacious layout. Several reviewers highlight the convenient parking and proximity to food and drink vendors. The park's accessibility is mentioned as a strength, with one visitor noting the nearby market and accessible entrance. During Khmer New Year celebrations, it becomes a gathering point with local vendors selling snacks and food. Some reviewers recommend it specifically as an afternoon or evening destination for a relaxing walk.

The park functions best as a daytime family destination, though many visit in late afternoon to avoid heat. It suits families with young children, people with mobility considerations given the accessible entrance, and visitors looking for a free, low-key outdoor space. Kampong Thom Market is 4.4 km south-west of Young Kimla guest house — a short ride rather than a walk.

Kampong Thom Market is a working market in the town of Kampong Thom, open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM. It is not a tourist museum or reconstructed attraction—it is where residents buy fresh produce, cooked food, and local goods. Visitors browse stalls selling fresh fruits and vegetables, locally produced cashew nuts, and, for the adventurous, fresh cooked insects. The market operates across different sections, with items and activity shifting across the day. The atmosphere is described as relaxed and friendly, with the smells of the market being part of the experience.

Visitors consistently report it as a genuine local market worth exploring, particularly for those passing through on the way to Angkor Wat. A few traders speak English, which helps with navigation and conversation. Shoppers note the variety available and that local prices apply—bringing small bills is practical. The market reflects the town's character as a quieter place in central Cambodia, rather than a high-pressure tourist attraction. The freshness of the produce is mentioned positively, though stock clearly varies by time of day.

The market suits independent travellers looking for an authentic local experience rather than a packaged tour stop. Early morning hours catch the freshest selection and peak trading activity. The town itself is positioned on routes toward Angkor Wat, and Kampong Thom is also known for cashew nut production. If you are passing through the province, the market provides genuine contact with local commerce and food culture.

Independence Monument - Kampong thom is 4.5 km south-west of Young Kimla guest house — a short ride rather than a walk.

Independence Monument in central Kampong Thom stands as a commemorative structure marking Cambodia's independence from French colonial rule, which lasted from 1863 until 1953. The monument sits in the busy heart of the city, surrounded by hotels, restaurants, and government buildings, making it accessible and easy to reach for visitors exploring the town.

Visitors consistently note the monument's central location and describe it as a worthwhile stop, particularly if you are already moving through central Kampong Thom. Some travellers have found it interesting to observe construction work on the site itself, viewing the restoration or maintenance process as part of the experience. The general sentiment among visitors is positive, though few elaborate in detail on what makes it memorable.

The site is open around the clock, so there is no restriction on when you can visit. The monument works best as part of a broader walk through Kampong Thom's town centre rather than as a destination in itself, especially if you are staying nearby or passing through on the way between other stops. It requires no entry fee and takes little time to see.
