Great little stay for 4 days. The room was very nice to stay in. Aircon cold. Couch to chill on and a little coffee station/office table to write and drink your morning coffee. Bed was big and comfortable. Nice shower area. Outside area is nice with lovely pool and bar area with tables and chairs for eating and sitting by the pool. It's about 5 mins from city with tuk tuk The host stephan was a great dude. Always up for a chat and to help you find somewhere to eat or drink. I got sick with man flu and he went out of his way to get me medicine without me asking. All in all a great place to stay and will come back in the future.

The most relaxing, welcoming hotel we have stayed at in our 2 month trip. Juli and Stepan made us feel so welcome and part of the family, we stayed up playing uno together on New Year’s Eve and we always sat and enjoyed the pool with some lovely cocktails together. The little puppies were an added bonus to our stay. The pool and rooms were spotlessly clean. They even have a swap shop where you can swap an item of clothing or something you don’t need anymore with someone’s else’s things, which is a really lovely idea and something I have been looking for. The most peaceful oasis in the heart of Kampot, please visit them and you will not regret it. I’ve never felt so welcome and relaxed as I have with them in Step Hotel. Can’t wait to come back again!

Underpriced for what's on offer so book while stocks last! Family rooms plus smaller (couples) rooms around the pool. Clean as a new pin! About a 5 minute tuktuk ride to Kampot centre but beautifully peaceful. Breakfast and hot snacks available, chatty and friendly but not intrusive European hosts. Pool was perfect temperature. One word review. OUTSTANDING

We had a wonderful time in Kampot thanks to this place. It is a bit outside the city so quiet and not overloaded, yet easily accessible by motorbike or tuktuk. The rooms had everything we needed, clean with a big pool right in front and good breakfast included right at our room's door. For the price we paid, it was a great value. The best part is how welcoming the owners are. They not only took the time to help us and give some tips for the area, but it feels more like talking to new friends. If you need a relaxing and warm place, you can go there! Bonus point for the puppies who were especially cute.

This was by far the worst hotel experience I've ever had. The hotel claims to be located in the city center on Agoda, but in reality it is far away and in the middle of nowhere. The location is completely misleading. We arrived at 8:00 PM to check in, and there was not a single staff member at the reception. We tried calling the phone number provided, but nobody answered. We were left standing outside with no assistance and no way to contact anyone. A hotel should at least have staff available or provide a reliable way for guests to check in. This place failed at the most basic level of hospitality. I would strongly advise other travelers to avoid this hotel.

Green Cathedral

Sights 1.7 km 22 min walk 4.2/5 on Google

Green Cathedral is 1.7 km north-west of The Step Hotel — about 22 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “sights”.

The next two places under “sights” from The Step Hotel are Krong Kampot (3.4 km) and Farm Link (3.7 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Green Cathedral is a riverside kayaking spot in Kampot where visitors paddle through narrow waterways lined with dense vegetation. The experience centres around renting kayaks from a local operator and exploring the calm river channels at a leisurely pace. Several nearby hotels also arrange rentals for around 5 dollars per two hours.

Visitors consistently praise the tranquility of paddling through the green surroundings and the friendliness of the kayak operator, who guests describe as welcoming and knowledgeable. Many mention that he offers homegrown fruit to visitors and shares details about his garden. The atmosphere on the water is generally calm and meditative. However, plastic pollution is a recurring complaint. Multiple visitors note significant amounts of trash and debris floating in the water, which some found difficult to overlook despite the natural beauty. One visitor decided against swimming due to water quality concerns. Opinions differ on the extent of the problem—some saw rubbish only in patches, while others felt it dominated the experience.

Go in the early morning or late afternoon for the best light and smallest crowds. The kayaking works for anyone seeking a slow-paced nature activity, including those who prefer to stay on land, as the operator is accommodating to non-paddlers. Bear in mind that water cleanliness varies; if you are hoping to swim, ask locally about current conditions before committing. The river is genuinely shallow and safe for paddling, making this suitable for first-time kayakers and families with older children.

Restaurants 2.9 km 4.9/5 on Google

BaZaar Café & Healing Space is 2.9 km south-west of The Step Hotel — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from The Step Hotel are Greenhouse ( restaurant & coffee ) (3.6 km) and Ciao (3.7 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Tucked away in Kampot, this café pairs homemade, health-oriented food with a garden setting at the back, complete with hammocks. The signature order across visits is the Buddha bowl, alongside kefir, mango lassi, tonics, and a chocolate cookie that regulars keep coming back for. Beyond food, the space leans into its "healing" name with offerings like tarot readings, and the overall feel is artistic and calm rather than a quick-stop café.

Guests are consistently enthusiastic about the food quality, describing it as fresh, clearly homemade, and flavourful, with the Buddha bowl mentioned again and again as the reason to visit. The garden seating and hammocks come up repeatedly as a highlight, giving the place a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere that some visitors returned to daily. The one practical gripe is the lack of air conditioning, noticeable on hot days since the space is open-air. Prices are described as higher than typical local spots, though reviewers who mention this generally feel the quality justifies it, and cash-only payment has been noted as well.

This suits travellers looking for a slower, more contemplative meal rather than a fast bite, and it works well for an afternoon of tea and cake as much as a full meal. It is open daily except Sunday, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, so it is not an evening dinner option. Given the open-air setup, arriving earlier in the day or in cooler weather may be more comfortable. Bring cash, and if the garden and hammocks are part of the appeal, allow enough time to actually sit and stay rather than just eat and go.

Samaki Market is 3.0 km south-west of The Step Hotel — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “markets”.

The other place under “markets” within reach of The Step Hotel is Kampot Night Market (3.4 km).

Samaki Market is Kampot's main general market, occupying a central location where locals shop for everyday supplies. The stalls spread across the space with distinct sections: fresh produce including tropical fruits like mangosteen, sugar apple, and salak; seafood and meat counters; clothing and textiles; jewelry; and toys. Beyond retail, the market also houses practical services—hair salons, key cutting, and shoe and clothing repair shops. The atmosphere is authentically local rather than tourist-oriented, with vendors setting up from early morning and the space growing busy with tuk tuks and motorbikes.

Visitors consistently praise the market's range and authenticity, noting that you can find nearly everything in one place at local prices. The produce section draws particular attention, especially the fresh tropical fruits available at the north-side kiosks; seafood like crab is noted at around 3-4 USD per kilogram, with cooking services available for 1-3 USD. The main criticism visitors mention is limited parking, which can be frustrating during peak hours. Several reviewers note that the best time to shop is early morning, around 5am after vendors set up, both for the best selection and to avoid produce that has been sitting out.

The market operates daily from 7am to 5pm. It suits visitors looking to shop like locals, eat inexpensively, or source ingredients for self-catering. Early morning is essential if you want the freshest pick and easier navigation, though expect crowded conditions with vehicular traffic during those peak hours. This is a working market for locals first, so it rewards those who arrive prepared and early.

Visitors appreciate that there is no entrance fee, with support coming through purchasing drinks or merchandise. A few reviewers noted they returned multiple times during their stay, suggesting the experience holds up to repeat visits.

Visitors find textile stalls, small shops selling clothing and everyday goods, scattered eateries serving budget meals, and a dedicated area with activities for children. It functions primarily as a local gathering place rather than a tourist destination, though visitors do pass through.

Guests consistently describe the market as clean, small, and charming. The food is mentioned positively for being tasty and affordable. Visitors note it is welcoming to families and children, with several describing it as a good spot to hang out with friends or family. The atmosphere appeals to people seeking an authentic local experience rather than a polished tourist venue. No significant complaints appear in visitor feedback, though the size is acknowledged as modest.

The next two places under “sights” from The Step Hotel are Green Cathedral (1.7 km) and Farm Link (3.7 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Krong Kampot is a riverside town in southern Cambodia that has become a growing destination for both local and international visitors. The town sits along the Preaek Tuek Chhu River and serves as a base for exploring the surrounding region, including access to Bokor National Park, pepper farms, and fruit plantations. Visitors find a mix of attractions: colonial-era architecture from the French period, waterfront promenades, boat trips (including evening firefly-watching tours), and fresh seafood restaurants. The town itself operates at a slow pace, with the option to walk through streets with river breezes or explore nearby agricultural areas.

What draws people to Kampot is its unhurried atmosphere and variety of activities within reach. Visitors consistently praise the charm of the old buildings, the relaxed feel of the place, and the quality of local food, particularly the seafood and the region's famous pepper. A pepper farm tour comes recommended by multiple visitors. The riverfront area is noted as pleasant for strolling and watching sunsets. However, some visitors suggest a day or two is sufficient rather than a longer stay, and at least one mentioned that the water quality near the town centre can appear murky. The town is acknowledged as fairly commercial, though this has brought a decent range of restaurants and hotels.

Kampot works best for travellers seeking a quieter stop with cultural and culinary interest rather than a beach resort atmosphere. The pace suits those wanting to rest between busier destinations. The nearby pepper farms and access to Bokor National Park make it useful as a base for day trips. Most visitors see it as a worthwhile detour for one to three days while travelling through southern Cambodia.

The menu includes curries, noodle dishes, rice plates, and items like granola, pancakes, and toast, with drinks noted as strong and generously poured.

Visitors consistently praise the atmosphere and the owner's friendliness and hospitality. The food quality is described as excellent, with affordable prices and generous portions. Some guests mention the experience of painting their names on a mural wall. However, service can be uneven: food sometimes arrives slowly or at different times within a group, and occasionally items from orders have been missed, though the owner makes quick corrections. One visitor found the 30-minute wait notable.

The restaurant is open Monday through Tuesday only (9 AM to 9 PM or 9:30 PM respectively) and closed the rest of the week, so check hours before visiting. It sits on a quiet street and tends to be quieter during the day.
