Steung Khiev Guesthouse

The Balcony is 129 m north-east of Steung Khiev Guesthouse — about 2 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “bars”.

The next two places under “bars” from Steung Khiev Guesthouse are TOP-X (847 m) and Miss Wong Battambang (1.6 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

The Balcony is a bar and restaurant in Battambang located in an old house beside the river, with a balcony as its main seating area. It operates sporadically: open Monday and Sunday evenings, Friday and Saturday nights until 4 AM, and closed Tuesday through Thursday. The menu is small but includes burgers, lasagna, and Khmer dishes alongside a drinks selection. The space is described by visitors as a chilled spot with good music and river views.

Visitors consistently praise the owners—particularly noted as Vutha, Kalyan, and Bobby—for being friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere draws a mix of expats and locals, and guests mention it as a relaxed place to unwind after work or travel. However, one female solo traveler reported a negative experience involving unwanted attention from the owner and poor toilet conditions, describing the environment as uncomfortable for women alone. This contrasts sharply with other reviews that emphasize the place as welcoming, suggesting the experience may depend on who is managing when you visit and the clientele present.

The Balcony suits visitors looking for a casual evening spot with a local feel rather than a polished bar. Go on Friday or Saturday nights if you want an active atmosphere, or Sunday if you prefer something quieter. The limited food menu means it works best as a drinking venue rather than a dinner destination. Women travelling solo may want to assess the environment when they arrive before settling in for the evening.

TOP-X is a bar on Road 3 in central Battambang that draws a regular crowd of locals and visiting friends. The space is compact, with seating that visitors describe as a little narrow, but it operates as a proper venue with live music, a range of drink options, and a food menu featuring appetisers and other dishes. The bar opens at 6 PM each evening and stays open until 2 AM.

Visitors consistently praise the prices, which several note are cheap, and the quality of food. The live music and overall atmosphere appeal to groups, and staff are described as friendly. The main caveat is volume—the music is loud enough that conversation becomes difficult, a feature some enjoy but which can isolate solo drinkers, particularly those without shared language with other patrons. One visitor mentioned receiving a different order than requested, though noted the service made up for it. The crowd is predominantly local.

This is a social bar best suited to groups of friends rather than solo travellers seeking conversation. If you're in Battambang with others and want reasonably priced drinks and food in a lively local atmosphere, it's worth the visit. Expect it to be busy, loud, and oriented toward people who know each other. It opens every day from 6 PM, making it a reliable evening option throughout the week.

National Museum is 928 m north of Steung Khiev Guesthouse — about 12 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “museums & galleries”.

The next two places under “museums & galleries” from Steung Khiev Guesthouse are Mrs. Bun Roeung’s Ancient House (1.5 km) and HUMAN GALLERY - Joseba Etxebarria Photography (1.6 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

The National Museum in Battambang holds a modest collection of Khmer artifacts spanning prehistoric and historical periods. Visitors find pottery, sandstone carvings, statues, and reproductions from the Hoabinhien culture and both Pre-Angkorian and Angkorian eras. The museum is small and unfussy in presentation, with displays organized clearly and labelled in English. Staff are noted as friendly and helpful. Most people spend 30 to 45 minutes here.

Visitors consistently praise the museum as a peaceful, clean space that offers genuine insight into local history and Khmer culture. Those interested in archaeology appreciate the well-organized layout and the reproduction pieces showing daily life from prehistoric periods. The main reservation is scale and comfort: the building is not air-conditioned, which some visitors find uncomfortable in the Cambodian heat, and the presentation is simpler than larger regional museums like those in Siem Reap. The entry fee is 3 USD per person for foreigners, with no further donation required.

The museum opens Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. It suits travellers spending time in Battambang who want to understand the province's archaeological heritage beyond its colonial architecture and river scenery. Go early in the morning or after 2:00 PM to avoid the midday heat.

Zodiac Cafe and Movie is 1.1 km north of Steung Khiev Guesthouse — about 14 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “cafés & bakeries”.

The next two places under “cafés & bakeries” from Steung Khiev Guesthouse are Starbucks Cafe (1.1 km) and The Lonely Tree Café (1.5 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Zodiac Cafe and Movie is a cafe in Battambang with an industrial aesthetic and a stated focus on film. The space features distinctive decoration that visitors regularly mention, and the cafe stocks books in Khmer. Coffee is the main draw, priced around 1.85 dollars, prepared by staff who speak English.

Visitors are divided on the coffee itself. Some find it good and well-executed, while others have found it disappointing enough to leave unfinished, so expectations should be modest on this front. What draws more consistent praise is the overall atmosphere and vibe, described as nice for relaxing, plus the friendliness of the staff. Food options appear limited, which a few visitors have noted as a constraint if you arrive hungry. The cafe is open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Zodiac works best as a place to spend an hour with a book or to sit quietly rather than as a destination for a full meal. It suits travellers looking for a local-feeling spot with character rather than a coffee specialist venue, and those who want a calm environment to work or read during the day.

This Starbucks sits on National Road 5 as you approach Battambang from Phnom Penh, offering the chain's standard handcrafted coffee, espresso, tea, and pastries alongside breakfast and lunch items. The space has decent seating, clean facilities, and ample parking. It operates daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Visitors consistently praise the drinks and service quality. Several mention trying seasonal flavours that differ from Western locations, sometimes pleasantly surprised by how the staff interprets orders—one guest received a honey grapefruit cold brew made as a frappe, which they found refreshing. The venue appears spacious enough for lingering. However, one visitor noted the service felt impersonal compared to other branches, citing lack of traditional Cambodian greetings and the staff not asking for names when taking orders. There was also confusion over a promotion mentioned on the cafe's Facebook page, which staff initially denied before correcting themselves about a Vienna latte deal.

Go if you want reliable coffee and familiar Starbucks quality during travel on the Phnom Penh–Battambang route. The setting suits both quick stops and longer stays. Be aware this is a franchise location without reserve menu items, and service approaches vary—some visits bring notably warm interactions while others feel more transactional. WiFi availability was not confirmed by reviewers.

A café, yoga studio and art gallery combined in the heart of Battambang, on Street 2. Visitors find a garden dining area with comfortable seating alongside indoor tables, a menu that mixes Cambodian dishes with Western and healthy options, fresh juices, and a relaxed, creative space that doubles as a community hub. Beyond the food, the venue runs yoga classes, group runs or walks, and a Kitchen Tales tour that takes guests through Battambang's street-food scene and local recipes.

Reviews are consistently positive about the food, singling out the green curry, veggie burger, dirty farmer salad, and the nom pang with tofu as standouts, along with the fresh juice blends and sweet bites for dessert. The garden setting and overall atmosphere come up repeatedly as reasons to linger for hours, helped by available wifi. Service is described as warm and attentive. A few guests note the eggplant dish runs spicy, and the yoga sessions, priced around three dollars, are mentioned as a worthwhile add-on rather than an afterthought.

Open Tuesday through Sunday from 8am to 10pm, closed Mondays, which is worth noting if planning a visit around a specific day. It suits travellers looking for a slower-paced meal or coffee stop with healthy options, those curious about combining food with a cultural or activity-based experience like the Kitchen Tales tour, and anyone wanting to fit in a yoga session or morning walk while in town. The garden seating and workable wifi also make it a reasonable spot to settle in for a few hours rather than a quick bite.

Across multiple visits, guests consistently praise the quality of ingredients and execution. The French bread sandwiches arrive crispy, the lasagne comes with fragrant cheese and properly cooked pasta sheets, and local dishes like fried eggplant with pork are described as delicious. Noodle dishes arrive filling with visible fresh vegetables. One regular mentioned visiting over several years and returning repeatedly. The bar selection stands out—ice-cold beers and French wine by the glass. A few visitors noted the lasagne's cheese was quite strong, so flavour preferences vary. The ground and lower floors house Cambodia's first modern art museum, displaying permanent works by four resident artists alongside rotating exhibitions of local contemporary pieces. Upstairs is a rooftop café with views toward a Buddhist temple, serving coffee, healthy food, and drinks in an air-conditioned space with plants and natural light. Some artworks are available for purchase, and a small gift shop stocks books, prints, and scarves.

Visitors consistently praise the quality of the coffee and food, noting the variety and occasional fusion flavors. The service receives repeated mention for being attentive and genuinely welcoming. The art collection itself draws appreciation for its curation and its engagement with Cambodian history through modern artistic expression. The overall atmosphere—quiet, tastefully designed, and suited to both relaxation and working—emerges as a strong point. One regular described it as a place they genuinely missed after leaving the city. The caveat worth noting: photography of the exhibited works is not permitted.

The entrance fee to the gallery is 5 USD; spending at least 8 USD at the café grants free museum access. The space closes Mondays but operates Tuesday through Sunday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. It suits visitors looking for a break from Battambang's busier commercial areas, those interested in contemporary Cambodian art and local artists, and anyone wanting reliable coffee and thoughtful food in a composed setting.
