About Sleeping Trees

Sleeping Trees is a secluded resort on Sunset Beach, Koh Rong Samloem, featuring tents and bungalows positioned directly on white sand overlooking turquoise water. The property offers hammocks, beach chairs, and wooden seating nestled under trees, creating shaded spots throughout the grounds. The on-site restaurant serves wood-fired pizza, open-fire BBQ, and crepes, with a selection of Chilean wines.

Reaching the resort requires either a 30-minute jungle trek or a boat (with final access via wading or water taxi). The beach itself sees minimal crowds even during high season, offering an quiet, natural setting far removed from the busier party scene of nearby Koh Rong.

The area

Sleeping Trees sits on Sunset Beach on the island of Koh Rong Samloem, Cambodia. The location is deliberately remote—accessible by a 30-minute jungle trek from the nearest pier, or by boat with final wading access. The beach remains quiet even during peak season, with only a handful of accommodation options nearby.

Good to know

Cash is essential; card facilities are limited. The trek to the resort involves rough jungle paths; guests with substantial luggage may prefer the boat option via M'Pai and water taxi, which offers direct drop-off. Expect minimal wifi and mobile signal. Mosquitoes and wildlife are present but part of the natural island environment.

A true slice of paradise, with secluded golden-white sand, gorgeous sunsets, delicious food, and tents right on the beach! It’s about a 30 minute trek to get here, but that just adds to the secluded jungle feel, and makes this beach all the more special. Those who want to skip the walk can book a boat, which still requires splashing the last few meters. The beach itself is extraordinary - easily the best I visited between Koh rong and Koh rong samloem, significantly more untouched and private than Saracen bay. There are beach chairs and hammocks dotting the shore, with lots of options for shade or sunbathing. The sunsets are the highlight - every night was new and beautiful. The tents themselves are right on the beach, and very spacious. No air con but the provided fan keeps it cool enough at night, and the water sprayer is helpful for sandy feet! The shared bathrooms were relatively rustic but always clean and available, with plenty of water. The food options were all good-great, with a highlight being the crepes! Lots of fun and strong cocktails as well, having a mai tai at sunset was a huge highlight. There are a few other restaurants along the beach, so it’s easy to try different options. This beach also has bioluminescent plankton! You can either see it late at night from the beach itself, or by booking a kayak tour next door, which I would highly recommend. It’s like swimming in an ocean of stars. Overall a huge highlight of my 6 months backpacking, and the perfec

The bay of sunset beach is an incredibly beautiful place. Thankfully, it's not a party place (that's Koh Rong, the other island). This stretch of white sand and turquoise water is home to just a couple of places to stay. Even in high season it never gets packed. Everybody will find his or her spot. The lovely accommodation at Sleeping Trees with bungalows and yurt-style tents offers lots of shade and different kinds of seating (hammocks, sun chairs, wooden benches etc.) underneath the trees with a picture perfect view of the bay. Additionally, a perfectly positioned swing gives you the chance to enjoy some amazing bay views. Apart from this, it's soooo relaxing lying in a hammock and letting the time go by. Moreover, there are two really sweet cats that love to be pet and cuddled by guests (but no pressure if you don't like cats). To sum it up: Staying here will make you feel like an incredibly fortunate castaway. The common area with restaurant, bar, pool table and darts is well arranged. It has a shelf with a diverse compilation of books and card games that might keep you busy on rainy days. The French owner takes care that you will get a great breakfast with yummy crepes (our pick: go for the ones with homemade mango jam!), fresh fruit (juice) or muesli. For lunch there are good salads and savory crepes with your choice of toppings. In the evening the restaurant has alternating barbeque or wood fired pizza on offer (the BBQ mackerel with ratatouille was amazing!). Ever

Great place on a stunning beach. The staff were super helpful, the food was great too. They have snorkels behind the bar that you can borrow for free, and so many hammocks and deckchairs to relax in. It’s quite wild, so just be prepared for little wifi / no signal, and a lot of mosquitos and wildlife (but so many fish for snorkelling!) And make sure you have cash! But it’s so worth it, you will be hard pressed to find a beach as beautiful as this! One thing to note if you are planning to walk from Eden pier. If the waves are too choppy, the ferry will drop you off at a different pier on Saracen bay, which is a long way from there the walk starts. But you can get a quad bike from there to take you across the island and drop you off at the top of the hill above sunset beach. The walk down is steep but not for too long, we did it with big backpacks. For the way back, staff will call the ferry companies to know which pier to go to, and can ring the quad bike driver to come and pick you up on the hill at your desired times.

*Note: this review is related to Sleeping Trees restaurant offering only. It is not a review of their accommodation offering. This spot is well known for a couple key offerings: 1) their wood fire pizza and their open fire BBQ plates; and, 2) their crepes (with savoury and sweet). We can highly recommend their open fire BBQ evenings (which they rotate with the wood fired pizza nights), and any and all crepes. The owner is French so it’s safe to say that he takes his crepes seriously! He also takes his wine seriously. He stocks excellent Chilean wines for a fair price. It’s worth making a nice glass of wine (or a full bottle of same) a part or your meals here. Note: unlike the other businesses along Sunset Beach these folks welcome credit cards as payment, even if you’re not an overnight guest. Recommended.

If you have more luggage than 'just' a backpack, we would recommend taking the boat to M'Pai and continuing by watertaxi (very easy to obtain in M'Pai) from M'Pai to Sunset Beach. The water taxi will drop you (and your luggage :)) off right in front of Sleeping Trees #easy. We didn't know about this option, so we booked the boat to Saracen Bay. From there, we went by scooter (scooter drivers will be waiting at the pier - we paid 15 USD for 2 scooters) to the jungle path 'entrance' to Sunset Beach. From there on continued by foot. With all of our luggage, it took us about 45 minutes to get to Sleeping Trees. Although it was unique, we did not want to repeat that experience, so when we checked out, we booked a water taxi that picked us up at the beach (see description above - we only paid 30 USD, as we shared the taxi with another couple we paid 7.50 USD p/person). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at one of Sleeping Trees' bungalows, having the comfort of a bed, shower and a toilet. There is a super relaxed atmosphere at Sleeping Trees, and at no point did it feel crowded, although it was almost fully booked. The beach is clean, and when you wake up, you can dive right in. Yves is 'the rock' of this place; if you have questions or need help, you can ask him. We stayed for 10 days and we could have stayed longer. All the other resorts are on walking distance, so you can get some variety when it comes to food and drinks. We would happily stay again! Note: No mobile phone recep

Sunset Beach

Parks & nature 24 m 1 min walk 4.7/5 on Google

Sunset Beach is 24 m south of Sleeping Trees — about 1 minutes on foot.

Sunset Beach sits on Koh Rong Samloem island, reached by a 30-minute hike from Saracen Bay. The final approach is a steep jungle descent of roughly 100 metres with ropes along the way; the return climb is shorter but more demanding. The beach itself is a crescent of soft white sand backed by trees, with calm, clear turquoise water shallow enough to feel like a pool. A handful of low-key bars and restaurants blend into the vegetation along the shore, designed for watching the sunset rather than drawing crowds.

Visitors consistently describe the beach as peaceful and quiet, a place that genuinely feels removed from tourist infrastructure. The water clarity and calmness are often mentioned as standout features. People appreciate that the beach has not been over-developed—structures are minimal and tucked away. If you are considering the hike, several visitors note that mosquitoes are a significant presence in the jungle section, particularly as you approach the beach, and recommend bringing substantial repellent. The steep terrain on both directions of the walk is real and worth preparing for physically.

Go in the dry season or as the wet season ends, when the jungle path is more passable. The hike demands reasonable fitness and proper footwear with grip. Sunset Beach suits travellers seeking genuine quiet and willing to work for it—those looking for easy beach access or developed amenities should stay in Saracen Bay instead. Bring water, mosquito protection, and realistic expectations about the climb.

Coco restaurant is 1.5 km north-east of Sleeping Trees — about 19 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The other place under “restaurants” within reach of Sleeping Trees is Seapony Cafe (5.0 km).

Coco is a casual restaurant on Saracen Bay in Koh Rong Samloem, set around a small private pier that lights up at night. It serves Cambodian dishes alongside breakfast options and cocktails in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. The space is clean and simple, with bungalows nearby, and visitors consistently mention the evening ambiance and sunrise views across the bay.

Visitors praise the food quality and freshness across all meals. The breakfast set—comprising egg, toast, pancake, fruit salad, fruit shake, and tea or coffee—draws regular praise for value and portion size that sustains through the day. Diners also recommend the green Kampot pepper squid, lok lak chicken, curry chicken, and amok. Staff attentiveness is frequently mentioned. The main reservation some visitors note is that portions are smaller than expected, though most found them adequate and tasty. The restaurant draws both tourists staying nearby and travellers specifically worth the walk to visit.

The restaurant opens from 7:00 AM to 9:30 PM daily, making it viable for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It suits anyone staying in the Saracen Bay area or willing to walk from neighbouring resorts. The best time to visit is early morning to catch the sunrise over the water, which multiple visitors describe as the highlight of their stay.

Restaurants 5.0 km 4.8/5 on Google

Seapony Cafe is 5.0 km north of Sleeping Trees — a short ride rather than a walk.

The other place under “restaurants” within reach of Sleeping Trees is Coco restaurant (1.5 km).

A relaxed breakfast and lunch café in M'Pai Bai village on Koh Rong Samloem, set in a garden setting that guests describe as calm and homely. The kitchen bakes its own bagels and bread, and the menu runs through omelettes, smoothie bowls, breakfast burritos, pancakes, eggs on toast, and cinnamon French toast, alongside coffee, smoothies, and milkshakes made with homemade ice cream. Vegetarian options are available and dishes can be adjusted on request.

Reviews are consistently enthusiastic, with several visitors saying they returned day after day during their stay on the island. The bagels come up again and again as a highlight, along with the freshly baked bread, the espresso and banana smoothie, and the passion fruit smoothie, though one guest found the latter sweeter than expected. The friendliness of the staff is mentioned repeatedly, including one account of the team remembering a regular's coffee order after just a couple of visits. Prices are noted as being on the higher side for the island, but reviewers generally feel the quality justifies the cost.

Seapony Cafe opens daily from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM except Tuesdays, which makes it a breakfast-and-lunch destination rather than an evening one. Given its popularity, arriving earlier in the morning is a sensible move, especially if you want a table in the garden. It suits travellers staying in or near M'Pai Bai who want a reliably good, unhurried start to the day, and it is worth returning to more than once given the range of the menu.

Bar Bok Bowie

Bars 5.1 km 5.0/5 on Google

Bar Bok Bowie is 5.1 km north of Sleeping Trees — a short ride rather than a walk.

Bar Bok Bowie sits above the cliffs at M'Pai Bay on Koh Rong Samloem, a small bar run by expat owners Sharon and Jon who stayed on the island through the pandemic before opening here in 2023. The draw is the setting: a clear view over the cliffs and sea that turns into a proper sunset spot come evening, paired with a cocktail list that runs well beyond the usual island offerings, including a coconut espresso martini and gin and rum mixes. There is food too, with spring rolls and a chicken roll dish mentioned more than once, plus a pop-up kitchen on Sunday nights.

Visitors are consistent in their enthusiasm here, praising the friendliness of the owners and staff, the quality and creativity of the drinks, and the view itself. Reggae Sunday comes up repeatedly as a highlight, with live music and a good atmosphere that pulls people back more than once during their stay. Several reviewers mention snacks served free alongside drinks, and the resident dog gets a friendly nod too. No real complaints surface in the reviews, though the bar's small size and popularity suggest it is not the place for a quiet, empty corner during peak sunset hours.

Go for sunset, and stay through the evening if you can, especially on a Sunday when the reggae night and pop-up food add to the draw. It suits couples and travellers looking for a relaxed but slightly elevated spot to drink well rather than just cheaply, and it is worth checking local noticeboards or chat groups for event timings, since opening hours and special nights can shift. Given the setting and the small scale, arriving a little before sunset is a sensible move if a table with a view matters to you.

M'Pai Bay

Sights 5.2 km 4.5/5 on Google

M'Pai Bay is 5.2 km north of Sleeping Trees — a short ride rather than a walk.

M'Pai Bay is a forested bay on Koh Rong Samloem with an active fishing village at its centre. The settlement sits on a sandy beach with jungle trails nearby, and the bay itself has clear water suitable for swimming. The village has a working community feel—locals, expats, and visitors coexist here rather than the bay serving purely as a resort destination. Small coffee places and casual restaurants line the beach, serving both Cambodian and Western dishes.

Visitors consistently describe the place as a hidden gem with genuine village atmosphere. Reviewers mention the warm local community, the relaxed vibe, and the appeal of experiencing real island life rather than a polished tourist enclave. Dogs run free, children play openly, and the overall tone is informal and unhurried. The beach itself draws praise for its beauty and swimming conditions. Some visitors express regret at not staying longer, suggesting the bay rewards a multi-day visit over a quick tour stop.

The bay is accessible as a day trip from Saracen Bay or other parts of the island, but the village is best experienced if you stay overnight or longer. The area operates year-round. This suits travellers seeking an understated island experience with genuine local interaction rather than curated resort facilities—those wanting beachside restaurants, swimming, and village exploration without commercialisation should find it appealing.
