Due to some changing trip plans I actually did not end up staying at Koalama while on Sanloem. Huge mistake! And I ended up spending most of my afternoons and evenings there anyway, because the hostel has an incredibly comfortable and funky vibe. It attracts all the right people. Super friendly, very chill. Frederick, the owner is an absolute gem. He goes above and beyond to make sure you have an incredible stay on the island. He went out of his way for me multiple times assisting with food orders and taxi arrangements. He guided myself and another visitor to the nearby waterfalls and showed us an incredible afternoon there. The hostel is very ideally located if you’re staying in M’pai Bay and I simply cannot say enough good things.. Awesome place, Awesome host.
This place is amazing! You'll come for a few days and end up staying weeks. Of course the location is perfect and beach and snorkelling spots play their part but the way Fred makes you feel welcome is next level!
For the frenchies: En plus y a du cidre breton 😍
I cannot speak more highly of my stay at Koalama. The owner, who has newly brought this place to life, is lovely and his chill but thoughtful vibe radiates through the place. I stayed in both the dorm and a private bungalow and loved both. The entire bay has the perfect chill and rustic atmosphere, but this location was at the edge of the main beach strip which made it quiet even if something was going on around town. The common areas are fairly social with folks sitting around reading, playing pool, or doing yoga - so it was perfect for traveling solo to make friends. So glad I was able to stay a week, and if I could have, I would have stayed longer!
Had an amazing stay at Kualama Koh Rong Sanloem!
It's a beachfront hostel! perfect if you're looking to chill by the beach.
The common area is wonderful, I spent most of my time there!
Located on a quieter side of the island, everything you need is within walking distance.
The rooms are good. Note: there's a fan for each bed, but at night the weather cools down, so it was totally fine.
Highly recommended for anyone seeking a chill, relaxed vibe.
So let's start with the fact that the ferry from Sihanoukville does not stop in this part of the island.
To get here you have to take either a taxi boat or a private boat which can be very expensive (typical scam for tourists).
As soon as I arrived I was greeted by André who was welcoming and friendly.
As soon as I was given the room I informed the reception that the locker that belonged to my bed was locked. At first they thought that a guest had forgotten the combination of the lock so they broke it, only to find out that it actually belonged to another guest.
The manager (French man) said that I would have to deal with the guest who owned the bag inside the locker (even though I did nothing). In the end André solved the problem.
As for the room: there is no air conditioning so it is unbearably hot.
The mosquito nets are useless because I was eaten alive.
The shower does not have hot water (which is not necessarily a bad thing since it is very warm).
The bathrooms are also very dirty and often there is no toilet paper.
So after spending a night sweating (also because the mini fan that was provided to me did not work) and fighting with mosquitoes I decided to check out.
Once again the manager was very rude and grumpy regarding my early check out.
