The location of this property was fantastic, making it easy to explore the area. However, the cleanliness, staff service, and facilities were just average. The room had a small amount of mold on the grip holding the shower, but it wasn't enough to be too unpleasant—just keep the fan on to air out the room. As for the staff, the man was friendly and approachable, but the woman seemed to ignore us when we greeted her, which was a bit odd. Despite these shortcomings, the accommodation is decent for those who prioritize location over other amenities. It provides a comfortable enough stay for a short visit, but don’t expect anything above average in terms of cleanliness or customer service. One highlight of the trip was the two tours we did with Jason from "Jason's Countryside Experience Tour". I highly recommend it! Jason is incredibly knowledgeable about the history of Kapot, sharing fascinating details about local myths, where to eat, how people lived in the past and present, and how the Khmer Rouge played a role in shaping the region. He even gave me a podcast to listen to that helped me better understand the origins of the Khmer Rouge. Be sure to check him out online through his website!

Cold aircon, good fan, comfortable bed. What else do you need? Room was clean, bathroom could have been cleaner but it wasn't bad. It's in a good spot near the river and a short walk to the markets if you're into that. Good scooters to hire, and the staff are helpful. We have booked a bus/ferry to koh rong from the hotel for a decent price (we thought we where going to have to bus back to phnom penh and double back to Sville) so this has saved alot of mucking about. They also bus to other places (even HCMC) for a good price.

We stayed here for 3 nights, the room was very spacious, clean and Aircon worked really well. We had our own balcony with chairs and space to dry our clothes/towels. The staff here were really friendly, it seems to be run by a family and they give their full attention. Also hired a scooter for the day for $5 to take us into bokor national park, scooter was well maintained, the owner even let me borrow one in the morning to grab some tickets from the train station free of charge. Only 10 min walk from the centre. Would recommend

Host was really friendly and changed our room straight away after check-in as there was a leak, as well as giving advice on stuff in town. Decent location, only 10 minute walk away from the centre where bars and restaurants are, but still quiet in the evenings. Room was a decentnsize, bed was comfortable and shower was okay too. Room, particularly the bathroom could have been cleaner.

Samaki Market is 386 m north-east of Kampongbay Makeng II guest house — about 5 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “markets”.

The other place under “markets” within reach of Kampongbay Makeng II guest house is Kampot Night Market (505 m).

Samaki Market is Kampot's main general market, occupying a central location where locals shop for everyday supplies. The stalls spread across the space with distinct sections: fresh produce including tropical fruits like mangosteen, sugar apple, and salak; seafood and meat counters; clothing and textiles; jewelry; and toys. Beyond retail, the market also houses practical services—hair salons, key cutting, and shoe and clothing repair shops. The atmosphere is authentically local rather than tourist-oriented, with vendors setting up from early morning and the space growing busy with tuk tuks and motorbikes.

Visitors consistently praise the market's range and authenticity, noting that you can find nearly everything in one place at local prices. The produce section draws particular attention, especially the fresh tropical fruits available at the north-side kiosks; seafood like crab is noted at around 3-4 USD per kilogram, with cooking services available for 1-3 USD. The main criticism visitors mention is limited parking, which can be frustrating during peak hours. Several reviewers note that the best time to shop is early morning, around 5am after vendors set up, both for the best selection and to avoid produce that has been sitting out.

The market operates daily from 7am to 5pm. It suits visitors looking to shop like locals, eat inexpensively, or source ingredients for self-catering. Early morning is essential if you want the freshest pick and easier navigation, though expect crowded conditions with vehicular traffic during those peak hours. This is a working market for locals first, so it rewards those who arrive prepared and early.

Krong Kampot is a riverside town in southern Cambodia that has become a growing destination for both local and international visitors. The town sits along the Preaek Tuek Chhu River and serves as a base for exploring the surrounding region, including access to Bokor National Park, pepper farms, and fruit plantations. Visitors find a mix of attractions: colonial-era architecture from the French period, waterfront promenades, boat trips (including evening firefly-watching tours), and fresh seafood restaurants. The town itself operates at a slow pace, with the option to walk through streets with river breezes or explore nearby agricultural areas.

What draws people to Kampot is its unhurried atmosphere and variety of activities within reach. Visitors consistently praise the charm of the old buildings, the relaxed feel of the place, and the quality of local food, particularly the seafood and the region's famous pepper. A pepper farm tour comes recommended by multiple visitors. The riverfront area is noted as pleasant for strolling and watching sunsets. However, some visitors suggest a day or two is sufficient rather than a longer stay, and at least one mentioned that the water quality near the town centre can appear murky. The town is acknowledged as fairly commercial, though this has brought a decent range of restaurants and hotels.

Kampot works best for travellers seeking a quieter stop with cultural and culinary interest rather than a beach resort atmosphere. The pace suits those wanting to rest between busier destinations. The nearby pepper farms and access to Bokor National Park make it useful as a base for day trips. Most visitors see it as a worthwhile detour for one to three days while travelling through southern Cambodia.

Some guests mention the experience of painting their names on a mural wall. However, service can be uneven: food sometimes arrives slowly or at different times within a group, and occasionally items from orders have been missed, though the owner makes quick corrections. One visitor found the 30-minute wait notable.

The restaurant is open Monday through Tuesday only (9 AM to 9 PM or 9:30 PM respectively) and closed the rest of the week, so check hours before visiting. Downstairs serves as a café paired with a souvenir section, while upstairs functions as a relaxed reading area. The shop stocks new and second-hand books in English, French, and Khmer, and operates a book exchange service where visitors can swap titles they have brought with them. The outdoor patio faces Street 722 with minimal traffic noise.

Visitors consistently praise the coffee and the friendly staff. The banana bread and red tea latte are specifically mentioned as standouts. The book selection across multiple languages draws repeat visits, and the upstairs seating area is described as a calm spot to read, study, or play games. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. One note: the upstairs books show visible wear from humidity, and new books are wrapped in plastic for protection, though this packaging does not entirely prevent age marks on the stock itself.

The daily menu runs to bagels made fresh in house, smoothie bowls, and coffee, with both indoor and outdoor seating for those who want to linger over breakfast or a midday coffee.

Visitors consistently mention the calm, welcoming atmosphere and the attentiveness of the staff, often naming the owners Chris and Ali directly for their warmth. The smoked salmon bagel, smashed avo bagel, and protein smoothie bowl come up repeatedly as favourites, alongside praise for the coffee and flat white. Several guests who joined the yoga classes describe them as genuinely grounding, and the combined Backpacker Package of a class plus food is mentioned as good value. Oat milk availability is called out as a welcome plus for those who need it. No complaints or caveats surface in the reviews, though more than one visitor admits to returning day after day, which suggests the appeal holds up beyond a single visit.

The café opens at 8am and closes at 3pm every day except Thursday, when it is shut, so this is a breakfast-and-lunch spot rather than an evening one. It suits travellers looking for a quiet break from Kampot's busier bar streets, and is worth building a morning around if you want to try a yoga class before or after eating, since sessions run upstairs on a daily basis. Given the alleyway location, it helps to know roughly where you are heading rather than expecting it to be visible from the main road.
