About Happy Homestay

Happy Homestay is a small guesthouse in Banlung, in Cambodia's Ratanakiri region, made up of separate cabins with an outdoor area of hammocks and tables where guests sit and relax. Rooms are simple and kept clean, and the property is run personally by the host, Mr. Vutha, known to guests as Mr. Happy.

Homemade food is served, and there is inexpensive local food available directly in front of the property. The host arranges jungle treks, including multi-day options such as a three-day trip, but there is no pressure to book any tour — guests have stayed several days without taking one. He also passes on practical local advice, such as where to rent a mountain bike (around $3 a day) and how to reach the nearby large lake, which has a walking path, docks for swimming and many hammocks, plus a hotel with an outdoor pool charging $2 for access.

The area

The homestay is at 33, 16452 33, Krong Ban Lung, Cambodia. It sits close to the city centre and the local market, both within easy reach. A large lake nearby has a clean shoreline, a walking path, docks for swimming and a great many hammocks, along with a hotel that charges $2 to use its outdoor pool. Mountain bikes can be rented locally for about $3 a day.

Good to know

The host arranges jungle trekking on request, including three-day treks, and guests report no pressure to book a tour if they would rather not. Cabin walls are thin, so noise from neighbouring cabins is audible. The host has waited up for guests returning late at night and prepared food and water for an early-morning departure. Ask at the homestay for local tips such as bike rental and lake access.

A great place to stay at a good price. Tasty homemade food. Close to the city center and the local market. And Mr. Happy is a truly kind and cheerful person — just like his name suggests! He shares interesting stories, gives helpful advice. I booked a 3-day jungle trek with him, and it was an amazing adventure!

Great place to relax. Hammocks and tables outside. Good food at local prices in front. NO pressure to do tours. I was there 5 days and didn't do a tour but no issue. You do hear people in other cabins as wall are thin, if that bothers you. A great place to relax! I rented a mountain bike from Pumpkin bike rental for $3 a day. Excellent condition/maintained. The large lake is clean , a walking path, docks for swimming and a hundred hammocks (really). There is also a hotel with a huge outdoor pool. $2 to swim. Ask at the homestay

Katieng Waterfall

Sights 8.2 km 4.3/5 on Google

Katieng Waterfall is 8.2 km south of Happy Homestay — a short ride rather than a walk.

Katieng Waterfall is a cascade in the countryside near Banlung, set within a small park that remains quieter than other waterfalls in the region. Visitors find a tiered drop with a cave running in a crescent shape beneath it, accessible by a steep trail with old stairs and slippery rocks. A heart-shaped lookout point serves as a photo spot. The base of the falls holds a pool deep enough for swimming, and a cave area provides shelter to rest and cool off.

The waterfall attracts consistent praise for its natural appeal and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors emphasize how deserted it feels compared to busier local attractions, and many mention the pleasant experience of swimming in the pool or exploring the cave underneath the cascade. The park charges a nominal entry fee (reported as one dollar for foreigners) and vendors nearby sell refreshments including sugarcane juice. A note of caution appears in reviews about the slippery rocks and uneven terrain—the trail requires careful footing, and at least one visitor raised concerns about potential snakes. The waterfall location is also home to an elephant trek operated by local handlers; opinions on this activity vary, with some visitors noting the elephants are chained but have forest space to roam.

The site is accessible year-round with no specific opening hours restrictions. Plan for roughly 30 to 45 minutes travel from Banlung city centre, though roads can be confusing and mobile signal is unreliable in the area. Asking locals for directions is advisable if uncertain. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip for the rocky terrain and bring a change of clothes if you intend to swim. It suits visitors seeking a quiet natural setting away from crowded attractions, though those uncomfortable with wet and uneven surfaces should consider the physical demands before visiting.
