We absolutely loved our stay here. Room was nice and large with clean and efficient AC. WiFi was also great and perfect for remote work. All in all really nice authentic khmer guesthouse that I can recommend and would stay again. But the most important thing is how nice was the host. The lady that runs the guesthouse is so nice, so genuine, and so helpful that you instantly feel like home. We will miss her dearly.

Our stay with Soriya was truly exceptional. We felt welcome from the very first moment. Everything was clean, cozy, warm and wonderfully family like. Soriya and her team were always ready to help and really gave us a good home for our new start here. We cooked together, we could use the kitchen freely and she even rented us motorbikes. We spent a lot of time together and I would even say a real friendship has grown from it. We also grew very fond of the three boys. This family is simply adorable. Thank you so much for everything and for taking such good care of us. A place full of genuine warmth and hospitality. Truly recommended and unforgettable ❤️ Arkoun for joining your family for 2 months 🙏❤️

We absolutely loved staying at Sunshine Hotel! The rooms were so beautiful and clean. The walls were made of wood and looked like traditional Khmer Style. There was a lot of attention to detail, with bedding matching the curtains nicely and a kettle / safe in the room. It was a very peaceful place to stay and had a lovely relaxing garden. We were made to feel at home and felt very comfortable. When we got off the bus in Kampot we were dropped off in the middle of nowhere and there were lots of scary dogs. Soriya and her son kindly picked us up on the motorbike and rescued us, even though it was late at night! This was very kind of them and we really appreciated this. The sunshine hotel was not far to town by motorbike and was very close to the river. I really like the peaceful location. We rented a motorbike from them and when we asked for a more powerful bike, they sorted this out for us straight away! The whole family was very accommodating and their English was amazing! They did everything they could to make us feel at home and helped to organise our travel to Vietnam. I would definitely stay here again.

This is a truly guesthouse. Everyone there makes you feel as a very important guest. Since the first moment I felt the good energy from the owner that cares about guest comfort. The employees clean all the common places every day. The rooms are extremely comfortable and good decoration, they all have a kettler, coffee and tea. ( prices for the room from $8). You can also have homemade breakfast, dinner and lunch there at the same price from the other places. I stayed longer than planned because I felt calm and peace. You wake up from the sounds of birds, the cool breeze in the morning and nights invite you to relax. If you are worried about distance, there is a ptt station with a 7eleven very close. And the delivery apps like Panda works well. I was so peaceful there that I just went little times to the center. As her the cook the amok and the chicken curry!!! She is also an excellent tourist guide.

Beautiful Khmer style rooms and the best service and staff in town. The owner will treat you like family and speaks perfect English. Located 4km from the main square so it's very quiet. Property meticulously maintained. I've stayed in many hotels in the area and would not go anywhere else. You will not be disappointed!!!

Green Cathedral

Sights 1.3 km 16 min walk 4.2/5 on Google

Green Cathedral is 1.3 km north of Sunshine Hotel Kampot — about 16 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “sights”.

The next two places under “sights” from Sunshine Hotel Kampot are Farm Link (3.1 km) and Krong Kampot (3.3 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Green Cathedral is a riverside kayaking spot in Kampot where visitors paddle through narrow waterways lined with dense vegetation. The experience centres around renting kayaks from a local operator and exploring the calm river channels at a leisurely pace. Several nearby hotels also arrange rentals for around 5 dollars per two hours.

Visitors consistently praise the tranquility of paddling through the green surroundings and the friendliness of the kayak operator, who guests describe as welcoming and knowledgeable. Many mention that he offers homegrown fruit to visitors and shares details about his garden. The atmosphere on the water is generally calm and meditative. However, plastic pollution is a recurring complaint. Multiple visitors note significant amounts of trash and debris floating in the water, which some found difficult to overlook despite the natural beauty. One visitor decided against swimming due to water quality concerns. Opinions differ on the extent of the problem—some saw rubbish only in patches, while others felt it dominated the experience.

Go in the early morning or late afternoon for the best light and smallest crowds. The kayaking works for anyone seeking a slow-paced nature activity, including those who prefer to stay on land, as the operator is accommodating to non-paddlers. Bear in mind that water cleanliness varies; if you are hoping to swim, ask locally about current conditions before committing. The river is genuinely shallow and safe for paddling, making this suitable for first-time kayakers and families with older children.

Restaurants 2.1 km 26 min walk 4.9/5 on Google

BaZaar Café & Healing Space is 2.1 km south of Sunshine Hotel Kampot — about 26 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from Sunshine Hotel Kampot are Greenhouse ( restaurant & coffee ) (3.4 km) and Laundry Cafe Burger Bar (3.6 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Tucked away in Kampot, this café pairs homemade, health-oriented food with a garden setting at the back, complete with hammocks. The signature order across visits is the Buddha bowl, alongside kefir, mango lassi, tonics, and a chocolate cookie that regulars keep coming back for. Beyond food, the space leans into its "healing" name with offerings like tarot readings, and the overall feel is artistic and calm rather than a quick-stop café.

Guests are consistently enthusiastic about the food quality, describing it as fresh, clearly homemade, and flavourful, with the Buddha bowl mentioned again and again as the reason to visit. The garden seating and hammocks come up repeatedly as a highlight, giving the place a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere that some visitors returned to daily. The one practical gripe is the lack of air conditioning, noticeable on hot days since the space is open-air. Prices are described as higher than typical local spots, though reviewers who mention this generally feel the quality justifies it, and cash-only payment has been noted as well.

This suits travellers looking for a slower, more contemplative meal rather than a fast bite, and it works well for an afternoon of tea and cake as much as a full meal. It is open daily except Sunday, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, so it is not an evening dinner option. Given the open-air setup, arriving earlier in the day or in cooler weather may be more comfortable. Bring cash, and if the garden and hammocks are part of the appeal, allow enough time to actually sit and stay rather than just eat and go.

Visitors appreciate that there is no entrance fee, with support coming through purchasing drinks or merchandise. Samaki Market is 2.7 km south of Sunshine Hotel Kampot — a short ride rather than a walk. It is the closest place to the hotel under “markets”.

The other place under “markets” within reach of Sunshine Hotel Kampot is Kampot Night Market (3.2 km).

Samaki Market is Kampot's main general market, occupying a central location where locals shop for everyday supplies. The stalls spread across the space with distinct sections: fresh produce including tropical fruits like mangosteen, sugar apple, and salak; seafood and meat counters; clothing and textiles; jewelry; and toys. Beyond retail, the market also houses practical services—hair salons, key cutting, and shoe and clothing repair shops. The atmosphere is authentically local rather than tourist-oriented, with vendors setting up from early morning and the space growing busy with tuk tuks and motorbikes.

Visitors consistently praise the market's range and authenticity, noting that you can find nearly everything in one place at local prices. The produce section draws particular attention, especially the fresh tropical fruits available at the north-side kiosks; seafood like crab is noted at around 3-4 USD per kilogram, with cooking services available for 1-3 USD. The main criticism visitors mention is limited parking, which can be frustrating during peak hours. Several reviewers note that the best time to shop is early morning, around 5am after vendors set up, both for the best selection and to avoid produce that has been sitting out.

The market operates daily from 7am to 5pm. It suits visitors looking to shop like locals, eat inexpensively, or source ingredients for self-catering. Early morning is essential if you want the freshest pick and easier navigation, though expect crowded conditions with vehicular traffic during those peak hours. This is a working market for locals first, so it rewards those who arrive prepared and early.

The next two places under “sights” from Sunshine Hotel Kampot are Green Cathedral (1.3 km) and Krong Kampot (3.3 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Farm Link is a working pepper cooperative and educational space in central Kampot that showcases the production of the region's famous pepper. Visitors tour a small processing facility and farm plot where staff demonstrate how black, red, and white pepper are sorted, dried, and prepared. The cooperative collects harvests from dozens of local small farmers. You can handle and taste different pepper varieties alongside other products the group produces, including long pepper, vanilla, salt, and sugar.

Staff consistently earn praise for their knowledge and friendliness, patiently explaining the labour-intensive processes behind each pepper type and answering questions in French and English. Visitors repeatedly mention the value proposition: Kampot pepper costs notably less here than at local markets, and staff will guide you through the tasting and selection process without pressure. The cooperative model itself appeals to those interested in supporting local farming directly. A minor note appears in one review about impulse buying—the prices and variety apparently make it easy to leave with more than planned.

The site operates mornings and early afternoons, closed around midday. Plan for a 30 to 45-minute visit. It suits anyone with interest in how local products are made, those seeking authentic souvenirs at reasonable prices, and travellers wanting context on Kampot's agricultural identity. The hands-on elements—smelling, tasting, watching manual sorting—make it accessible to most visitors regardless of expertise. Allow time before a midday closure if you're visiting in the morning slot.

Krong Kampot is a riverside town in southern Cambodia that has become a growing destination for both local and international visitors. The town sits along the Preaek Tuek Chhu River and serves as a base for exploring the surrounding region, including access to Bokor National Park, pepper farms, and fruit plantations. Visitors find a mix of attractions: colonial-era architecture from the French period, waterfront promenades, boat trips (including evening firefly-watching tours), and fresh seafood restaurants. The town itself operates at a slow pace, with the option to walk through streets with river breezes or explore nearby agricultural areas.

What draws people to Kampot is its unhurried atmosphere and variety of activities within reach. Visitors consistently praise the charm of the old buildings, the relaxed feel of the place, and the quality of local food, particularly the seafood and the region's famous pepper. A pepper farm tour comes recommended by multiple visitors. The riverfront area is noted as pleasant for strolling and watching sunsets. However, some visitors suggest a day or two is sufficient rather than a longer stay, and at least one mentioned that the water quality near the town centre can appear murky. The town is acknowledged as fairly commercial, though this has brought a decent range of restaurants and hotels.

Kampot works best for travellers seeking a quieter stop with cultural and culinary interest rather than a beach resort atmosphere. The pace suits those wanting to rest between busier destinations. The nearby pepper farms and access to Bokor National Park make it useful as a base for day trips. Most visitors see it as a worthwhile detour for one to three days while travelling through southern Cambodia.
