About Pomelo Homestay

Pomelo Homestay is a family-run guesthouse on Koh Trong, an island reached by a 10-15 minute boat ride from Kratie in eastern Cambodia. The hosts, the Nu family, welcome guests into their traditional Khmer wooden house, and the property sits a short walk from the ferry pier. Larger groups can be accommodated across two houses: the main home and the family's parents' house nearby.

Meals are central to a stay here. Guests are invited to cook and eat with the family, and dishes are prepared to order using fresh ingredients, some sourced from neighbours on the island. Khmer dinners, vegetable soup, fried tofu salad and desserts have all featured, and pomelo from the island is sometimes shared with guests.

The host also helps arrange activities in the area, including dolphin tours, kayaking, and self-guided bike tours around the island. Koh Trong itself is flat and quiet, which makes cyclin...

The area

The homestay is on Koh Trong island, at F2J4+RCG, Kratié, Cambodia. It is reached from Kratie by boat, a ride of 10 to 15 minutes, and the house stands a few steps from the ferry boat pier. The island is quiet, and cycling is a common way to get around it.

Good to know

Meals are prepared to order, so guests are asked to pre-order what they would like to eat. Tours on and around the island, such as dolphin watching, kayaking and self-guided cycling, can be arranged through the host. Groups too large for the main house may be split between it and the family's parents' house.

I had a fantastic and unforgettable stay at Pamelo Homestay! Initially, I was only planning to stay for 3 nights, but kept extending my stay! I ended up staying for 5 nights! This was mainly due to the fabulous time I was having at Koh Trung island! Our host Vireak was very hospitable, very welcoming and a great cook indeed! The first night dinner was very special! we were blown away by the high quality of the dishes he prepared for us, especially the Fried Tofu salad! and the veggies sup! Just pre order your meals, Mr. Vireak will make it happen! A genius cook! Had a delicious dessert, the local juicy Pamelo, the best in Cambodia!! The house was a typical Khmer traditional wooden house. The entire house was very cleaned! Bed was very comfortable! I slept like a log! There were friendly cats and kitties in the house, adorable and cute! I woke up early everyday, to enjoy the fresh air and strolled around the island, enjoying the gardens and the friendly people of Koh Trung! Old and young, will greet every everyone they encounter, very friendly people! We booked a Kayak tour to see the Irawaddy Dolphins thru Mr. Vireak. We had a wonderful time! Seeing the Dolphins with their calfs up close was just absolutely amazing! You do not require to have any experience doing kayaking to do this tour! Very special experience, an experience that we will remember for a long long time! Tour Guide Mr. Lucky was impressive! Very experienced, knowledgeable and funny! Never dull moments with him

Highly recommend this homestay! Vireak helped organise a dolphin tour and a self-guided bike tour of the island. Food at the homestay was delicious and included ingredients from Vireak’s neighbours.

Our group of 16 persons had the pleasure of staying at Vireak’s home during our trip from Laos to Cambodia, and we highly recommend this experience enough for anyone who wants to truly immerse themselves in the local culture. The house is cozy, clean, and well-located just few steps from the ferry boat pier. Half of us stayed in Vireak home, while the rest was hosted in Vireak parents house. Vireak is an extraordinary host: kind, helpful, sharing interesting stories about his life and Cambodian culture. He made us feel right at home, even preparing traditional dishes that made us fall in love with the local cuisine: for the dinner we helped him in preparing the ingredients, making it very funny. It’s clear he puts a lot of passion and care into every aspect of his hospitality. The breakfast was amazing too, with scrumbled eggs, fruit and the sweetest pomelo we have ever eaten. If you’re looking for an authentic and warm experience, this homestay is the perfect place. Thank you so much, Vireak, for making our stay so special. We hope to come back soon!

Vireak is an absolute culinary genius..... Fresh ingredients, delicate touch & wonderful balance of flavors. What he creates and shares in his home is simply AMAZING - the best meal I've had in Cambodia. Biking around the island is a relaxing vibe & beautiful views of simple living. I'd highly recommend everyone stay with Vireak at least 1 night if not more & appreciate the entire experience and broader perspective on living standards while sharing good company & a spectacular Khmer dinner with the sweetest host possible

We had a great stay at Vireak's house. The bed was comfortable, and we really loved the charm of the traditional house. The bike tour around the island was lovely, and we can’t forget to mention Vireak’s amazing cooking—everything was delicious! We also got to try some pomelo, which was a nice treat. The kayak tour Vireak arranged for us was perfect from start to finish.

Cafés & bakeries 81.1 km 4.5/5 on Google

The Shade Cafe & Car Wash is 81.1 km west of Pomelo Homestay — a short ride rather than a walk.

The Shade Cafe & Car Wash sits in Chamkar Leu District in Kratie, combining a small café operation with a car wash service. Inside, visitors find a modern, air-conditioned space with comfortable seating and a distinctive hut at the back furnished with hammocks. The drink menu centers on coffee and tea, with lattes appearing frequently in visitor accounts. The café also stocks a limited selection of packaged food items, though fresh pastries are sparse.

Visitors consistently praise the coffee quality and the welcoming demeanor of the staff, who have been noted for accommodating requests like providing wifi access. The modern interior and photo-friendly aesthetic draw positive mention, as do the reasonable prices—one visitor recorded a coffee at 6,500 Cambodian Riel. The hammock seating area appeals to those seeking a more relaxed setting. The main reservation most reviewers raise is the lack of fresh baked goods; several note that pastry options are minimal or appear stale, which disappointed those hoping for snacks to accompany their drink.

The café opens daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, making it viable for morning coffee or an afternoon break. It works well as a pit stop for travelers passing through the region, or for locals seeking a modern café space with sturdy tables suitable for working or meeting. Those primarily seeking substantial food should eat elsewhere, but it serves adequately as a drinks stop with basic packaged options.

Restaurant 3 Chomnean is a casual local establishment in Kratie that serves Cambodian cuisine in an open-air setting. Visitors order from a selection of pre-made side dishes and can pair their meal with rice and cold beer. The restaurant operates daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, making it available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Guests consistently describe it as a good local option for the area. The informal atmosphere and ready-made dish selection appeal to visitors seeking straightforward Cambodian food without lengthy waits. Reviews are brief and positive, with no significant complaints noted, though the limited detail in feedback suggests the experience is unpretentious rather than remarkable.

The restaurant works best for travellers comfortable with casual dining and basic Cambodian standards. It suits early risers, as it opens at 6:00 AM, and those looking for a no-fuss meal in a neighbourhood setting rather than a tourist-focused venue.
