New Land Hostel

The Balcony Koh Rong - Wine & Cheese House is 447 m north-east of New Land Hostel — about 6 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “bars”.

The other place under “bars” within reach of New Land Hostel is Ocean Blue Bar (1.1 km).

The Balcony is a small wine and cheese house on Long Set Beach on Koh Rong, set slightly apart from the island's beach-bar strip. It specialises in charcuterie and cheese boards paired with a curated wine list, alongside coffee and a bottomless brunch on Sundays. The setting looks out over the jungle and sea, with mellow background music adding to the relaxed feel.

Visitors consistently single out the cheese and meat boards as generous, well-made and a genuine treat for anyone missing quality cold cuts on the islands. The wine pairing draws repeated praise, as does the smoked duck croissant mentioned by more than one guest. What comes up again and again, though, is the service: reviewers describe the team, including hosts named Louise and Neil, as warm, attentive and clearly invested in guests having a good evening. No real complaints surface in the reviews, only a wish from at least one visitor that they'd had time to catch the Sunday brunch.

This is a spot for slowing down rather than a lively night out, better suited to couples or small groups after a relaxed evening with good wine and food than to travellers chasing a party scene. Given that it's tucked away rather than on the main strip, it helps to ask locally or check directions before setting out, particularly after dark. It's worth timing a visit around the Sunday bottomless brunch if that fits the schedule, and worth arriving with an appetite, since the boards are reported as substantial rather than a token snack.

The other place under “bars” within reach of New Land Hostel is The Balcony Koh Rong - Wine & Cheese House (447 m).

Ocean Blue Bar sits on the beachfront in Koh Rong and operates as a combination pizzeria and bar. Visitors find Italian-style pizza as the main draw, alongside a full bar with happy hour beers. The space overlooks the sea, with a casual beach atmosphere and tables positioned to take in the views.

Guests consistently praise the pizza, describing the dough, base, and toppings as well-executed and comparing it favourably to European standards. The kitchen works quickly; orders arrive at the table fast. Service staff speak English and are noted as friendly and welcoming. One returning visitor came back two years later and found the pizza still at the same standard. Drinks are mentioned as cheaper than nearby bars. The beachfront location and overall atmosphere receive consistent approval. No significant criticisms appear in visitor feedback.

The bar suits anyone on Koh Rong with a craving for pizza and a beer with sea views. It works well for both quick meals and lingering over drinks at happy hour. Sunny Turkish Restaurant is 1.2 km north-east of New Land Hostel — about 15 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from New Land Hostel are CASA MIA PIZZERIA KOH RONG (1.2 km) and Happyplace (1.2 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Located on Pub Street near Longset Beach, this Turkish restaurant serves kebabs, pide (Turkish flatbread), wraps, mixed platters, and Turkish yoghurt with fresh fruit in a casual beachside setting. It is open daily from late morning until 10pm, making it a reliable option for both lunch and dinner during a stay on Koh Rong.

Guests consistently single out the kebab and beef or feta pide as standouts, with several mentioning they returned more than once during their trip because the food impressed them so much. The Turkish yoghurt with fresh fruit comes up repeatedly as a genuine rarity in the region, and reviewers describe it as generous and authentic. Beyond the food, the owner is mentioned by name in spirit if not literally — described again and again as warm, attentive, and visibly passionate about both the cooking and the service, checking in on tables and making sure orders were right. Service speed is noted as good even when the place is busy, and card payments are accepted without extra fees, which reviewers flag as a pleasant surprise on the island.

This is a place worth visiting more than once if time allows, given how many guests report going back the next day. It suits travellers looking for a break from the usual Khmer or Western beach-bar fare, and those wanting a full meal rather than a quick snack. Given the consistently high praise and popularity, arriving a little ahead of peak dinner hours is a sensible move to avoid a wait, though no specific reservation system is mentioned. It works equally well for solo diners, couples, and groups sharing a platter.

CASA MIA PIZZERIA KOH RONG is 1.2 km north-east of New Land Hostel — about 15 minutes on foot. It is among the three closest places to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from New Land Hostel are Sunny Turkish Restaurant (1.2 km) and Happyplace (1.2 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Casa Mia Pizzeria occupies a spot on Pub Street in Long Set, Koh Rong's main social hub. It is run by an Italian chef and serves wood-fired pizza and Italian pasta dishes. The space is described as warm and cozy, with decor visitors find appealing. The restaurant changed hands in February, and current visitors report strong quality across the menu.

Guests consistently praise the pizza, particularly the crust—crispy and light—and the quality of toppings and ingredients, which visitors find difficult to reconcile with the island location. Pasta dishes, especially carbonara, draw comparable praise for authenticity and flavour. The Italian chef is noted as a visible presence who brings genuine expertise to the kitchen. Staff friendliness is mentioned across multiple reviews. A note for context: earlier negative reviews online relate to the previous management; the current ownership has shifted visitor experience noticeably. Wine selection appears curated, with visitors mentioning specific choices like Amarone and Aperol Spritz.

The restaurant sits on Pub Street, making it accessible in the evening when tourists typically gather. Go expecting prices higher than casual island eateries but justified by ingredient quality and technique. It suits visitors looking for genuinely made Italian food rather than tourist approximations, and those willing to spend accordingly for dinner with friends or a date night on the island. Reservations are advisable on busy evenings given its popularity and island location.

Pub street Long Set Koh Rong island, Koh, Rong 12500, Cambodia

Happyplace is 1.2 km north-east of New Land Hostel — about 15 minutes on foot. It is among the three closest places to the hotel under “restaurants”.

The next two places under “restaurants” from New Land Hostel are Sunny Turkish Restaurant (1.2 km) and CASA MIA PIZZERIA KOH RONG (1.2 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Happyplace is a casual restaurant on Koh Rong that operates around the clock. The kitchen turns out pizza, pad Thai, rice dishes, fried rice, and chicken wings. It sits in a relaxed, laid-back setting that fits the island's atmosphere, and the owner and staff are noted by visitors as genuinely friendly.

The pizza receives consistent praise—visitors describe it as thin, crispy, and flavourful. Pad Thai also stands out as a strong dish. Rice and fried rice options are available, and you can request them without egg for a vegetarian choice, though some visitors have found the French fries excessively oily. Service is generally helpful, though wait times can stretch when the restaurant is busy or a large group arrives at the same time as you. Prices strike visitors as fair for an island location.

The 24-hour opening means you can eat here whenever hunger strikes during your stay on Koh Rong. Arrive when the restaurant is quiet if you prefer faster service. It suits anyone after straightforward, well-executed casual food in a friendly environment rather than fine dining.

Kaoh Touch Beach is 1.2 km south of New Land Hostel — about 15 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “beaches”.

The other place under “beaches” within reach of New Land Hostel is Royal Beach (4.0 km).

Kaoh Touch Beach is the main developed beach on Koh Rong island, lined with hotels, restaurants, bars, and rental services. It functions as the island's commercial hub, where most visitors find accommodation, food, and practical necessities within easy reach. The beach itself is a bay with sandy areas, though conditions vary.

Visitors consistently praise the convenience—food, lodging, and bike rentals are readily available at competitive prices, and the area suits those wanting easy access to services without travelling far. However, reviews also reveal significant environmental concerns that cannot be ignored. Multiple visitors report the beach is heavily littered with plastic and glass debris, the water smells of sewage, and waste streams flow into the bay from above. The sand poses a barefoot hazard due to sharp plastic fragments. Some visitors have been disturbed enough by the state of the area to participate in beach cleanups themselves. On weekends, the beach becomes busier with vendors and tourists, though it does not reach severe overcrowding.

The beach works best for travellers prioritising convenience and affordable facilities over pristine conditions, or those planning brief stays. If environmental cleanliness is important to you, reviews suggest looking elsewhere on the island. Visit during weekdays if you prefer fewer crowds and vendors. Bring water shoes to protect your feet, and manage expectations about water quality and beach conditions before arriving.

Ava Café is 1.3 km north-east of New Land Hostel — about 16 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “cafés & bakeries”.

The next two places under “cafés & bakeries” from New Land Hostel are Bella Vista (1.4 km) and Ma Baker (1.5 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Ava Café sits near the Long Set pier on Koh Rong, a small coffee stop for travellers staying or passing through Long Beach. The menu runs to espresso-based drinks with options like oat milk and flavoured syrups, served in cups reviewers noted for their quality, alongside iced versions such as vanilla or caramel lattes.

Visitors are consistent in singling out the coffee itself as a standout on the island, calling it strong and well made, and several say it is the best they have found in the Long Beach area. The service also comes up repeatedly, with mentions of a friendly, quick owner who is often smiling, and a resident puppy that gets a mention too. The one recurring caveat is about the seating area, with a request for more fans to deal with the heat, and one note that dessert options are limited.

The café opens daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, making it a straightforward morning or early afternoon stop rather than an evening one. It suits travellers based around Long Beach who want a reliable coffee fix between beach time, and those looking for dietary options like oat milk will find them here. Given the limited seating comfort mentioned by some, it may work better for a quick coffee than a long lounging session, though the quality and service are what keep people coming back.

Ocean Breeze is 1.4 km east of New Land Hostel — about 17 minutes on foot. It is the closest place to the hotel under “sights”.

The next two places under “sights” from New Land Hostel are Coconut Beach (4.9 km) and Golden Beach Surf Club (5.7 km), so there is a choice within a few minutes.

Ocean Breeze sits on Longset Beach on the southwestern coast of Koh Rong, a stretch of white sand backed by palm and casuarina trees. The beach is open around the clock and remains relatively quiet compared to more developed stretches nearby. Several cafes and restaurants operate along the shore, and scooter rental is available if you want to explore beyond the immediate beach area.

Visitors consistently praise the sand, water clarity, and overall peacefulness of the setting. Multiple reviewers note the beach remains uncrowded and describe it as suitable for swimming, walking, and watching sunsets. The seafront location and proximity to the speedboat port are conveniences regularly mentioned. However, service experiences vary considerably. Some guests report excellent stays with clean facilities, while others describe unhelpful staff, lack of luggage assistance, and unexpected charges like a $20 table reservation deposit for in-house guests — issues that one reviewer felt reflected unwelcoming treatment.

The beach works best for travellers seeking a quiet escape rather than a bustling hub. Visit during Cambodia's dry season (November to April) for the most reliable weather and calmest seas. Since the beach is accessible by speedboat from Sihanouk, check ferry schedules before committing to multi-day stays. If service standards matter to you, arrive with tempered expectations or ask detailed questions about current policies before booking.
